Job Summary
Staff Nurse - Renal Services Castle Vale Renal Unit
An exciting opportunity has arisen for qualified nurses to join our innovative and dynamic Renal Team, based at Castle Vale Renal Unit. This role offers an excellent opportunity for nurses wishing to develop their career within a haemodialysis setting.
Castle Vale Renal Unit is one of the Trust's nurse-led satellite dialysis units, providing outpatient haemodialysis within a modern Business Park setting. The unit currently operates 36 dialysis stations, delivering care six days per week across three shift patterns.
Participation in the emergency out-of-hours on-call haemodialysis service is a requirement of this role.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
You will work within the Haemodialysis Unit delivering high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients with chronic and acute renal failure. The role requires you to work autonomously within your scope of practice while contributing effectively to the multidisciplinary renal team, ensuring safe, compassionate and person-centred care in line with NHS values and Trust policies.
You Will
- Deliver safe, effective haemodialysis treatments in accordance with unit protocols, national standards and NMC Code
- Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments, planning, implementation and evaluation of care
- Prepare, operate, monitor and troubleshoot haemodialysis machines and equipment
- Cannulate arteriovenous fistulas and grafts competently (or work towards competency as part of structured training)
- Monitor patients throughout dialysis, recognising and responding to clinical deterioration or dialysis-related complications
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and within professional scope of practice
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential nursing documentation and electronic records
- Provide patient education and emotional support to promote understanding of dialysis treatment and long-term condition management
- Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring dignity, privacy and respect at all times
- Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and participate in emergency and resuscitation procedures
- Contribute to audits, quality improvement initiatives and service development

Qualifications
Essential
- Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. (Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
- Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
Experience
Essential
- Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
- Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice
- Being an accountable professional
- Promoting health and preventing ill health
- Assessing needs and planning care
- Providing and evaluating care
- Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams -- including prioritisation and delegation skills
- Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating health
- Improving safety and quality of care
- Awareness of current relevant clinical and professional issues and NHS policy
- Understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding and Mental Capacity
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues.
Desirable
- Experience in working in an Acute NHS practice setting as an undergraduate student nurse or post graduate registered nurse.

Essential
- Demonstrable communication and relationship management skills which include
- Listening -- writing -- reading -- speaking in English with understanding of contemporaneous record keeping
- Good IT skills ability to record information electronically
- Competent in a range of clinical skills/ nursing procedures willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice require
- Competent in managing the care of a group of patients / shift management (take charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff) relevant to the practise setting.
