Job Summary

We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and adaptable individual/s to join and support our HIV clinical Nurse Specialist team based at Heartlands Hospital.

In conjunction with the Senior Nurse (Band 8a) Band 7 HIV lead, Band 7 HIV Outreach / Community Lead, and Band 7 HIV Sexual Health Lead, the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality nursing to patients under the care of the HIV/BBV Services at University Hospital Birmingham. The successful candidate will be offered training to develop their experience as a HIV/BBV specialist nurse, offering knowledge and skills to support the field of HIV, Hepatitis, Infectious diseases, Sexual Health Practice, and/or Sexual Health Advising.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Successful candidates will have direct, outpatient, community, and remote clinical involvement and be jointly responsible for the management of a caseload of clients with complex specialty needs (HIV), acting as a specialist in this field.

There is a requirement to work with and support the further development of our injectables clinic, outreach service, assist the management of military patients, and work with the HIV transition service (A pediatric nursing qualification is not required) alongside any future HIV service developments.

You will, at times, work as an autonomous practitioner dealing with patients presenting with complex conditions not limited to HIV and a wide range of socio-economic issues affecting their healthcare. This will include providing highly specialist care, treatment, advice, information, education, and counselling to patients, families, partners, and carers living with or affected by HIV and in accordance with the UHB, NHIVNA, BHIVA, BASHH, and other specialty guidelines.

You will be supported to develop skills to routinely review stable patients with oversight of the Band 7 nurses and lead consultants. This may include Health Assessment & non-medical prescriber qualifications.

You should demonstrate how your current clinical practice relates to this specialist field through your application.

This post is offered as Full Time, Mon-Fri +/- Wed evening, with scope to work FT over 4 days once established.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Evidence of post-registration CPD / post-registration qualification in the appropriate area of specialty or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to FHEQ Level 6
  • Able to evidence how current clinical practice relates to the specialty role.

Desirable

  • Health Assessment course or equivalent.
  • Non-medical prescriber.
  • HIV-specific qualification or post-registration learning.
  • Sexual health or infectious diseases-related post-registration learning.
  • Knowledge of/completion of NHIVNA HIV Nursing modules.
  • Awareness of NHIVNA Person-Centred Model of HIV Nursing.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
  • Significant post-registration experience, with evidence of passion/enthusiasm and knowledge for the associated area of specialist practice.
  • Has related specialty training evidenced in the application.
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in the current post and ongoing professional development/competence
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to specialty
  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment
  • Demonstrate understanding/experience/willingness to be a practice-based supervisor/assessor as detailed in the NMC
  • Experience or knowledge of research and audit.

  • NHS Smartcard and Oceano trained.
  • PICS/Portal familiarity.
