Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring Sister or Charge Nurse to join Ward 29 and the Surgical Assessment Unit.
Ward 29 is a busy surgical ward caring for general surgical and lower GI patients, while the 6-bedded Surgical Assessment Unit provides assessment, investigation and treatment for patients who may require admission or same-day management. The unit operates seven days a week from 08:00 to 20:30, offering a dynamic environment in which to develop clinical and leadership skills.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and motivated nurse to contribute to high standards of patient care, patient safety and workforce development. You will work closely with the senior nursing team to support service delivery, lead by example and help create a positive and inclusive culture.
We welcome applications from experienced Band 5 nurses seeking career progression, as well as established Band 6 nurses looking for a new challenge. You will have opportunities to support staff development, contribute to quality improvement initiatives and play a key role in shaping the patient experience across both clinical areas.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
As a Band 6 Nurse on Ward 29 and the Surgical Assessment Unit, you will provide safe, effective and compassionate care while supporting the nursing team and contributing to the day-to-day management of both areas.
You Will
- Provide visible and inclusive clinical leadership, acting as a positive role model.
- Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality nursing care for surgical and lower GI patients.
- Coordinate daily ward and assessment unit activity, ensuring patient flow, staffing and clinical priorities are effectively managed.
- Support the assessment and management of patients attending the Surgical Assessment Unit, facilitating timely investigations, treatment, admission or discharge.
- Promote patient safety and ensure care is delivered in line with Trust policies, professional standards and evidence-based practice.
- Prioritise competing clinical demands, demonstrating sound judgement and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication and continuity of care.
- Support and develop Band 5 nurses, students, nursing associates and other team members through supervision, teaching and coaching.
- Contribute to staff induction, competency development and quality improvement initiatives.
- Promote a positive culture where staff feel supported, valued and empowered.
- Communicate effectively with patients and relatives, ensuring dignity, choice and person-centred care.
- Deputise for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse when required.

Qualifications
Essential
- Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. ( Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
- Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
Experience
Essential
- Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
- Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice
- Being an accountable professional
- Promoting health and preventing ill health
- Assessing needs and planning care
- Providing and evaluating care
- Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams -- including prioritisation and delegation skills
- Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating health
- Improving safety and quality of care
- Awareness of current relevant clinical and professional issues and NHS policy
- Understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding and Mental Capacity
- Awareness of Health and Safety issues.
Desirable
- Experience in working in an Acute NHS practice setting as an undergraduate student nurse or post graduate registered nurse.
Additional Criteria
Essential
- Demonstrable communication and relationship management skills which include
- Listening -- writing -- reading -- speaking in English with understanding of contemporaneous record keeping
- Good IT skills ability to record information electronically
- Competent in a range of clinical skills/ nursing procedures willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice require
- Competent in managing the care of a group of patients / shift management (take charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff) relevant to the practise setting.
- Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
- Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
- Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
- Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
- Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
- Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
- Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice
