Job Summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a talented and driven pharmacy professional to join our Pharmacy team as Specialist Pharmacy Technician -- Education, Development and Training, based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Cross site working is expected as well as one day of ward work per week.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced pharmacy technician to step into a specialist education and training role within one of the largest teaching hospital Trusts in England. You will work closely with the Education, Development and Training team, supporting the development and delivery of education across all pharmacy sites.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of pharmacy professionals. Your focus will be mentoring pre-registration pharmacy technicians and other trainees, supporting educational supervision, and delivering high-quality training across our service -- combining hands on clinical practice with educational leadership.
Previous hospital pharmacy experience and a passion for education and training are essential. You'll need proven mentoring and development skills, plus the ability to blend clinical expertise with educational excellence. Summary
Main duties, tasks & skills required
Support the delivery of education, development and training to pharmacy technical staff across UHB, with day-to-day leadership of trainees and coordination of training programmes.
Main Duties
- Develop and deliver training plans for pre-registration pharmacy technicians
- Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision and support to trainees throughout their placements
- Liaise with pharmacy personnel across all UHB sites to schedule and deliver training
- Act as Education Supervisor for cross-sector students in partnership with educational providers
- Set specific training objectives and deliver targeted training packages
- Conduct regular performance and development reviews
- Maintain the training needs analysis document to reflect current pharmacy practice
- Act as an expert witness for NVQ Level 2 and Integrated Level 3 qualifications
- Plan and attend standardisation meetings with the college
- Liaise with education providers regarding student issues and academic development
- Deliver training to nursing and Trust staff on pharmacy service changes
- Support development of pharmacy education and training programmes
- Maintain dispensary and ward-based core skills when required for rota support
- Contribute to rotas and workforce management
- Conduct line managerial duties including HR meetings and Trust policy enforcement
- Complete one day of ward working per week

Qualifications
Essential
- GCSEs -- Mathematics and English (Grade B/5) and four other subjects including Science (Grade C/4)
- Or
- GCSEs: Mathematics, English, and Science (Grade C/4 or equivalent) and two other GCSEs (Grade C/4) and successful achievement of the pharmacy service skills Level 2 NVQ qualification (or equivalent)
- Or
- Three A levels, one of which is a relevant science subject and Mathematics B/5 (GCSE or equivalent)
- Or
- Degree in science or humanities and Mathematics B/5 (GCSE or equivalent)
- Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians
- Or
- BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science and Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills
- Or
- equivalent as defined by the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Dispensing Accuracy Accreditation. West Midland's scheme or equivalent.
- Evidence of Continued Professional Development
- Professional Registration with the GPhC
- Accredited Checker Technician
Desirable
- Further education and training qualification or equivalent knowledge and experience
Experience
Essential
- Significant post-qualification experience in a hospital setting as a registered pharmacy technician.
- Experience of the specialist function for area of responsibility
- Experience in delivering training and supervision of others.
- Working under pressure, prioritising work as appropriate to achieve deadlines.
- Experience of planning workload according to departmental priorities
- Knowledge of Good Distribution Practice (GDP), MHRA licensing requirements, COSHH
- Demonstrates responsibility for complying with agreed personal development programme to meet set knowledge and competencies
- Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service including quality and audits
Desirable
- Experience of developing work processes and associated procedures
- Experience of undertaking appraisals
- Experience in staff management
- Experience of chairing meetings
- Proven skills and knowledge of the NVQ process.
