Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within our Acute Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Assessment Units at Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital. Are you an independent scanning nurse specialist? Is providing excellent nursing care one of your key drivers? Is making a difference and doing the right thing fundamental to you?
If the answer to these questions is yes then this specialist role within the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit may be right for you! We are looking for a compassionate, highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our friendly and well-established team. You will need to be an experienced gynaecology nurse who is already trained and competent at performing transvaginal as well as transabdominal scans on women in early pregnancy.
You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a genuine passion in caring for women undergoing a range of early pregnancy complications and gynaecology issues. Our units deliver specialist, evidence-based, holistic care to women in an environment that supports patient choice and dignity. Excellent teamwork skills are vital to allow collaboration across the team and the ability to manage your own workload is essential. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist you will take the role of nurse in charge on shift where often the units are busy so you will need to demonstrate excellent leadership skills in a fast-paced environment. You would be expected to work across site so flexibility to work at either hospital is essential.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
You will require excellent communication and leadership skills, the ability to work. You will need to have the ability to safely and effectively prioritise the workload.
The Post Will Involve
- Act as an Independent Practitioner, using advanced skills, including holding a recognised qualification in early pregnancy focused ultrasound, and be able to assess, diagnose and prescribe management plans based on your findings.
- Triage Early Pregnancy referrals that will come from a variety of health professionals including GP, Midwife, Private scan clinic, BPAS, 111, Badger service, other emergency assessment units within the trust, ED and direct ambulance transfers.
- Be competent with delivering bad news and counselling service users regarding appropriate treatment options, signposting for bereavement support and have an understanding of when referrals can be made to the recurrent miscarriage service.
- To organise the individual's treatment choice of either conservative management, Medical Management as an inpatient or outpatient and Surgical Management.
- Manage Pregnancy Tissue sensitively through collection, appropriate storage and testing in conjunction with the necessary consent forms.
- Mifepristone/Misoprostol administration.
- Be or become competent with the administration of Methotrexate.
- Review Blood / swab results and create management plans.
- Manage hyperemesis patient.
- Deal with incidences / complaints.
- Assist with updating Policies / Guidelines / SOP's.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Adult / Child Nurse on the NMC Register (Field dependent upon role)
- Evidence of post registration CPD / Post registration qualification in (appropriate area of speciality or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to degree / masters level equivalent FHEQ Level 6 /7
- Recognised mentorship course
Desirable
- To have or working towards a MSc/ Masters qualification
- To have or working towards advanced health assessment module -- where applicable to the role
- Non -- Medical Prescriber/ willingness to undertake - where applicable to the role
Experience
Essential
- Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
- Significant years post registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at B6 or above in defined or associated speciality
- Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level
- Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality.
- Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment.
- Experience of patient service user advocacy role
- Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff
- Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality
- Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding
- Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance
Desirable
- Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator
- Experience in service development
- Awareness of current research related to the speciality

Essential
- Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of health care professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skills.
- Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level and to manage / prioritise own workload, supervise / appraise and assess junior staff
- Competent in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required
- Ability to work under pressure across competing priorities
- Ability to undertake clinical audit, analyse information and develop robust measurable action plans to support improvement / change
- Evidence of ability to compile reports and documents for internal / external communication
- Knowledge of current evidence-based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development
