Job Summary

To hold 24-hour professional accountability for the managing of a team of staff on the maternity ward, delivering high-quality, caring, and compassionate patient-centered care through effective leadership and management and in partnership with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

To take overall responsibility for a specific clinical area, assess, plan, coordinate implementation, and evaluate the workload in the clinical area of responsibility.

Maintain the health and safety of families and colleagues at all times by complying with all relevant Trust guidelines, facilitate the implementation of the guidelines and procedures in the area of responsibility.

Promote multi-disciplinary team working, leading/liaising, communicating as necessary, and supporting junior staff.

Take a lead role in ensuring all students/novice practitioners receive appropriate practice facilitation and mentorship/preceptorship.

Working in partnership with colleagues across the Directorate to provide both clinical leadership and develop standards to promote high-quality practice.

To support Delivery Suite teams in the safe and effective delivery of care across both our Good Hope Hospital and Heartlands Hospital Sites.

Please note the pay band for this role is pending a final job evaluation outcome, which will be confirmed before recruitment takes place.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

  • Undertake clinical activity to satisfy the NMC requirements for registration, act as a role model by maintaining clinical competency and credibility through evidence-based clinical practice, while being aware of the needs of the team.
  • Provide leadership in the clinical area of responsibility, coordinate all staff efforts to ensure the provision of high-quality care, promotion of normality, and choice for women.
  • Promote health for women and their families, including parenting skills and health education, facilitating the achievement of national targets and initiatives.
  • Maintain and develop a high level of clinical and managerial skills and knowledge, and work towards competencies as agreed in personal development plan.
  • Comply with requirements for mandatory training and develop and contribute towards training in key pertinent skills.
  • Be aware of Local Safeguarding Children's Board and national policies and procedures and take appropriate action to safeguard women.
  • Undertake clinical skills as per the competencies for the role.
  • Comply with the Trust infection Control Policy. Attend Infection Control training as required with the department and directed by manager.
  • Endeavour to achieve a high standard of morale by effective organization and leadership and promote team working, facilitating a culture of professional respect and cooperation.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registered midwife (Diploma/Degree) (E)
  • Teaching/mentorship qualifications (E)
  • Evidence of a minimum of 5 years CPD (E)
  • Well-documented and up-to-date CPD portfolio (E)
  • Neonatal life support (E)
  • HDU care

Desirable:

  • Diploma/Degree in Health Related subjects and Certificate in Management (D)
  • Hold Newborn Examination Certificate
  • Leadership course

Experience

Essential:

  • 3 years' experience as a band 6 midwife
  • Specialist knowledge across a range of procedures pertaining to delivery suite and maternity services (E)
  • Extensive knowledge of all areas of maternity services developed throughout continuing professional development (E)
  • Recent experience in high-risk Antenatal/Postnatal Care and expert knowledge of obstetric complications (E)
  • Knowledge and ability to organize and prioritize workload within shift and allocate patients to appropriately skilled team member (E)
  • Well-developed IT skills and presentation
  • Extensive knowledge of UNICEF and BFI and infant feeding (E)
  • Ability to supervise juniors on a day-to-day basis (E)

Desirable:

  • Excellent presentation, teaching, verbal, and written skills (D)

Additional Criteria

Essential:

  • Be able to deal with complex facts and situations requiring analysis, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options (E)
  • Provide highly specialized advice to both junior midwives and obstetric colleagues (E)
  • Knowledge of child protection, domestic violence, substance misuse, and working with women with special needs (E)
  • Knowledge of statutory midwifery supervision (E)
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize abnormalities occurring at any time and refer appropriately to senior medical staff (E)
  • Minimum 5 years as a Band 6 Midwife (E)
  • Knowledge and experience of immediate resuscitation of mother/baby (E)
  • Ability to respond to complaints and fire calls as bleep holder for maternity (E)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current maternity issues/literature (E)
  • Has awareness of PREP, midwifery legislation, and midwifery educational training programmes (E)
  • Ability to provide a high standard of care within all given situations and monitor practice (E)
  • Aware of Safeguarding (E)
  • Ability to provide clinical experience (E)
