Job Summary
Are you an experienced Band 6 OT looking to take that next step into a band 7 post looking for a new challenge whilst continuing to develop your clinical experience and leadership skills?
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the development of 2 band 7 posts within the Stroke and Neuro Team at Heartlands Hospital. 1 post is full time and the other is 22.5 hours.
You will be working closely with the specialist physiotherapists within the acute stroke team and the wider stroke Occupational therapy team. There is a robust MDT within the stroke service and strong links with the stroke ESD teams.
This is an ideal opportunity if you have clinical interest in Stroke and Neurology and a strong motivation to develop skills and expertise and provide patient centred, evidenced based therapy.
You will need good clinical skills, a flexible approach; including excellent team working, organisational and time management skills. Evidence of prior leadership would be beneficial to support the role.
You will join our dynamic team of Therapists who strive towards holistic recovery.
Training and support will be provided by experienced Therapists already working in each speciality field with the focus on developing and maximising the potential and skills of the successful candidate via in house and funded courses.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
- To take responsibility for and provide Occupational Therapy leadership within the inpatient stroke and neurology team at BHH, working in collaboration with other UHB sites
- To undertake the specialist occupational therapy role in leading, planning, coordinating and delivering the inpatient OT service including neurology and working alongside the Band 7 Physiotherapist in Stroke & Neurology
- To take a major role in the specialist occupational therapy intervention as part of the team and wider MDT, assessing and treating own caseload of patients who may have complex neurological presentations, and support the occupational therapists in the implementation of treatment plans for neuro and stroke clients.
- To have specific skills in specialist seating & positioning and a broad understanding of the cognitive impact to patients, applying specialist assessment skills as required. Training and development opportunities will be available.
- To support with the coordination and development of the provision of an effective and efficient service for Neurological and Stroke clients within the East Birmingham area.
- To take part in weekend working service.

Qualifications
Essential
- Current registration with Health and Care Professions Council, OT register.
- Occupational Therapy degree qualification or equivalent, and significant NHS post graduate experience
- Documented evidence of Continued Professional Development of relevant specialist knowledge and skills
- Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.
Desirable
- Evidence of leadership training.
- Membership of a professional special interest group or national/regional network (RCOT specialist section neurological practice
- Recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.
Experience
Essential
- Understanding of organisational structure of the NHS and Social Care.
- An demonstrated ability to provide OT professional/clinical leadership
- Significant experience of working in an acute hospital setting with neurological and stroke experience.
- Experience of working within an acute OT team and participating in service development.
- Experience of supporting and supervision of junior therapists, student occupational therapists and assistants.
- A specialist knowledge across a range of occupational therapy practices, routine and non-routine, requiring relevant specialist knowledge in the field of stroke and neurology.
- Understanding of current legislation and application to Occupational Therapy and setting.
Desirable
- To be able to support and create clinical pathways to improve and develop specialist services.
- To have an awareness of creating Business cases to improve team outcomes and recruitment
- Open mindfulness of new ways of working and supporting recruitment.
Additional Criteria
Essential
- Highly developed physical skills including dexterity, coordination & sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information.
- An ability to not only prioritise and organise own workload, but support junior members of staff with caseload management. Offering coaching and implementation of strategies to support performance.
- An ability to cope with a range of complex options, finds solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action.
- An ability to lead and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- IT skills -- computer literate in email, Word & PowerPoint
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and an interest in developing expertise within Stroke & neurology
- Demonstrate a professional attitude.
- An ability to cope with moving/manoeuvring patients/equipment on a daily basis.
- An ability to frequently concentrate on patient assessments and treatments.
- An ability to cope with occasional exposure to distressing/emotional situations.
- Able to contribute to weekend rota (I in 5 weekends)
- Driving licence and car owner

Desirable
- Awareness and knowledge of traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions other than stroke in order to assess, treat, analyse patient's performance. Identifying correct discharge pathways.
- To share clinical knowledge and support junior members of staff with complex discharges for patients with neurological deficits.
