Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Research Governance Manager to join the Research & Innovation team at University Hospitals Birmingham. This is a key operational leadership role with responsibility for the effective management of research study set-up and Capacity and Capability activity across the Trust. You will oversee workload and prioritisation, provide operational leadership to the team, monitor performance against local and national targets, and provide assurance and escalation to senior R&I colleagues. The role requires confident decision-making on complex governance and set-up issues, leading service improvement where processes, standards or timelines need strengthening, and translating regulatory and policy changes into practice. We are looking for an experienced research professional with strong leadership, judgement and stakeholder-management skills who can take ownership of a busy service and help shape the next phase of UHB's study set-up improvement programme.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
You will lead the operational management of research study set-up and Capacity and Capability activity across UHB, with responsibility for ensuring studies progress efficiently, consistently and in line with national and local requirements. You will directly manage staff within the Research Governance Team, oversee workload and prioritisation, monitor performance and provide assurance and reporting to senior R&I colleagues. The role will require you to make and support complex governance decisions, resolve escalated set-up issues, challenge poor practice and lead service improvement where standards or timelines are not being met. You will also contribute to the development of policies, systems and processes, oversee key aspects of cost recovery and work closely with sponsors, investigators and internal teams to remove barriers to delivery. We are looking for an experienced research professional with strong leadership, judgement, negotiation and change-management skills who is confident taking accountability for a busy operational service.

Qualifications
Essential
- Knowledge of own area of expertise acquired through degree or equivalent experience and training plus further management knowledge to post-graduate diploma level
- Understanding of range of work practices, majority non-routine with intermediate level of theoretical knowledge -- i.e. good understanding of the R&D processes
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Current, valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training
- Knowledge of Health Research Authority (HRA), Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and (Integrated Research Application System) IRAS
- In-depth understanding of clinical research and trial management methodology including applicable regulatory requirements and regulatory approval process
- Significant Demonstrable experience in clinical trials and research governance.

- Experience of further academic/personal development

- Sound understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the UK clinical trials directive
- Experience of NHS research management and/or research administration, to include experience in the approval and set up of clinical research studies
- HR -- day to day supervision/management of staff and delivers training on a range of subjects
- Evidence of developing team / others
- Evidence of managing staff groups
- Evidence of project work, working with the NHS
- Evidence of good written and oral presentation skills
- Understanding of clinical trial methodologies & logistics
- Knowledge and understanding of the NCVR process

- Significant Operational management experience working within a NHS environment working with clinicians and other health care professionals at all levels of the organisation
- Evidence of managing service/organisational change
- Evidence of experience in risk management and service improvement
