Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Physiotherapist (Team Leader) to work in a Regional Neurosurgery & Neurology Unit located within a large Teaching Trust & Major Trauma Centre. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of a large dynamic team and alongside Consultant Physiotherapists, Clinical Specialists, and the wider MDT including Consultants & specialist nursing staff to deliver and develop the service.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who wishes to progress their clinical leadership skills and broaden their experience working within these specialty areas. The successful candidate will have managerial responsibility for a group of both registered and unregistered staff and provide leadership to the team ensuring provision of a high standard physiotherapy service. They will take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of a variety of complex patients within the pathways and be proactive in developing and expanding clinical practice within this specialty area. There is a strong commitment to MDT service delivery and improvement, and the opportunity to contribute to the wider therapy service as a leader.
Candidates should have significant experience in the field of acute neurosciences including working with patients with acute respiratory impairments and complex multifactorial needs.
The Physiotherapy Department actively supports individual CPD and personal development.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
The post holder will be expected to work autonomously, undertaking specialist, advanced assessments and treatment of patients with diverse or complex acute neurological presentations.
They will be expected to use advanced clinical reasoning, analytical and investigative skills to interpret clinical and non-clinical information in order to provide an accurate diagnosis, treatment planning and goal setting, and pathway planning.
The post holder will be expected to actively participate in the development and education of registered, un-registered and undergraduate therapists within the speciality. They will also be required to contribute to relevant departmental and specialty education programmes such as respiratory competency training.
There will be an expectation for active participation in service evaluation and quality improvement projects. The post-holder will be expected to have an awareness of current evidence in neurosciences and its application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
Key skills for this post include confidence in communication, strong leadership, collaborative working with peers, and a personal desire to develop. Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent time management skills day to day, as a well as proactive management of team and operational planning such as appraisals, rotation planning, respiratory competency training, staff planning, and staff induction.

Qualifications
Essential
- Appropriate Physiotherapy or professional qualification, e.g., MCSP/BSc or MSc.
- Registration with Health Care Professions Council
- CSP or equivalent professional registration
- Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own specialty, e.g., post-registration training, management/leadership competencies, and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio
- Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses in relevant areas of physiotherapy
Desirable
- Post-registration MSc modules in areas relevant to leadership & management and neurosciences.
- Attended student educator course
- Membership of relevant special interest groups.
Experience
Essential
- Significant post-registration experience, of which considerable experience has been within in-patient neurosciences as a senior physiotherapist in a NHS organisation. To include experience of working with neurosurgery, neurology, major trauma, spinal cord, and traumatic brain injuries.
- Experience of staff management including supervision and of development and performance management of staff.
- Significant experience in education and clinical training of others.
- Some experience of clinical/service evaluation
- Proficient knowledge and skill in the specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex acute neuroscience patients.
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Awareness of current evidence in neurosciences, major trauma, and neuro physiotherapy and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
- Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice.
Desirable
- Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit, and Risk management.
- Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession.
- Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery.
- Knowledge and understanding of the research process.
- Teaching experience to university students and multi-professional groups with evidence of ability to deliver high-quality presentations.
Additional Criteria
Essential
- Ability to work autonomously within specialist clinical area & undertake clinical analysis and reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment of neurosurgery and neurology patients.
- To be able to apply broad standards & guidelines to own practice.
- Well-developed specialist therapeutic handling skill relevant to this specialty.
- Leadership and influential skills, able to lead and command confidence in senior therapists, consultants, senior nurses, and managers within and related to neuroscience services.
- Able to demonstrate the ability to select and apply a wide range of treatment options for a range of clinical presentations.
- Good verbal & written skills; able to communicate complex clinical information in a clear and logical manner to patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals concerning a wide range of clinical situations.
- Proven organizational skills including prioritization and delegation.
- On-call skills and able to provide advice and patient assessment as a lone physiotherapist in an on-call situation.
- Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities, and Health and Safety to meet the differing needs of patients.
- Ability to work weekends and on-call as part of the physiotherapy emergency duty rota.
