Are you a dynamic, enthusiastic, and motivated Sonographer looking to develop your career within a specialist, tertiary ultrasound service?
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is seeking an experienced and patient-focused Sonographer to join our passionate and supportive Ultrasound team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the region's major tertiary hospitals, providing a comprehensive ultrasound service across a wide range of complex clinical specialties. The role offers valuable exposure to complex liver and renal transplant cases, alongside general abdominal, small parts, Head & Neck, MSK, vascular, and DVT examinations.
The post also attracts a 5% Recruitment and Retention Premium in addition to the standard Band 7 salary.

You will work autonomously as an independent reporting practitioner, supported by experienced Sonographers, Consultant Radiologists, and the Ultrasound Leadership team.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
The post holder will provide a highly specialised clinical ultrasound service, ensuring safe, effective diagnosis and treatment across UHB NHS Trust. They will meet operational and professional standards, manage and prioritise workload, and provide comprehensive independent reports within their scope of practice.
The post holder will contribute to service development, patient outcomes, and the education and development of staff within specialised ultrasound practice.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Training and development of staff in clinical ultrasound.
- Development and implementation of ultrasound protocols.
- Participation in audit, research, and service evaluation.
- Supporting service development, extended services, and modernisation.
- Promoting high standards of ultrasound and imaging practice.
- Working weekends, out of hours, and extended-day services as required.

Essential Qualifications And Experience
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent and a CASE-accredited postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound.
- HCPC registration, when eligible, or registration with the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT).
- Highly specialist knowledge and experience of ultrasound procedures.
- Understanding of NHS service development and modernisation, particularly imaging and healthcare workforce education.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally in a high-pressure and emotive environment.

Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, have a case-accredited postgraduate qualification in ultrasound.
- Must be state registered (HCPC or NMC) when eligible or Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT).
Experience
Essential
- Must have relevant skills/knowledge/experience in the range of ultrasound techniques which are required.
- To possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner.
- Highly specialist knowledge of ultrasound procedures.
- An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.

Desirable
- IT experience to use the necessary computerised reporting system and image recording system.
- Must be prepared to assist with the development of the service and protocols.
- Possess knowledge and understanding of the audit process.
Additional Criteria

- An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.
- Demonstration of innovation in the healthcare profession.
- Courteous conduct in difficult/contentious situations.
