Job Summary
We have a rare opportunity for a Speech & Language Therapy Team Leader to join our Medicine, Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) and Respiratory team at QEHB for 12 months.
Our service supports a wide range of patient cohorts who have communication and/or swallowing disorders including acute medicine, respiratory (including the respiratory support unit) and HCOP -- from the front door right through to discharge.
We have a large yet close-knit, highly skilled team who contribute to our robust supervision structure. Innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development are actively encouraged. We have a well-established SLT led Videofluoroscopy and FEES services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
The successful candidate would provide highly specialist input and leadership to the Medicine, HCOP and Respiratory teams, alongside a Highly specialist SLT within the same team.
You would work closely with your peer Highly Specialist SLT, Specialist Speech and Language Therapists and NQP Speech and Language Therapists and assistants to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.
The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia and communication difficulties relating to the acute medicine and HCOP caseload in a fast-paced environment.
Your Responsibilities Will Include, But Not Be Limited To
- Assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders on the acute medicine, respiratory, endocrinology and HCOP wards, including front-door services
- Utilising or working towards advanced skills including tracheostomy and FEES
- Service development and audit
- Working closely with the MDT
- Supervision and leadership
- Training of junior colleagues and students
- Working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
- A good standard of secondary education including A-Level or equivalent.
- BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Membership of RCSLT.
- Registration with HCPC.
- Completed RCSLT Level C/Level 5 EDS dysphagia competencies (or above).
- Willingness and capability to achieve FEES interpretation and scoping competencies.
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload at a specialist level
- Significant experience of working with acute, medicine or HCOP caseload
- Significant experience of working independently within an acute hospital setting
- Significant experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Significant post-graduate training, through attendance at short courses and/or via personal study.
- Evidence of attendance at national conferences or similar.
- Demonstration of people management at either an individual or team level.
- Experience of training Speech and Language Therapy undergraduates and junior SLTs.
Desirable
- Membership of a relevant CEN.
- Post-graduate education or research.
- Knowledge acquired through attendance at postgraduate specialist courses at Masters level or equivalent.
- Knowledge of the strategic direction of the Trust.
