Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee or Qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner to join the Cardiac Surgery Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Applicants must hold professional healthcare registration with a recognised UK regulatory body (NMC, HCPC or GPhC).
Qualified ACP Applicants
Applicants should have, or be working towards, the following:
- Cardiac specialty experience or experience within an acute secondary care setting (desirable)
- Postgraduate qualification in a cardiac or related specialty (desirable)
- MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and/or be working towards completion of an MSc, with evidence of achievement across the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice
- Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (V300) (essential)
- Advanced patient assessment module (essential)
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification (desirable)
- Recognised teaching, mentorship or supervision qualification, or equivalent experience
This is an excellent opportunity to develop advanced clinical practice skills within a specialist cardiac surgery service and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care within a multidisciplinary team.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
The successful candidate will join a team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners working within Cardiac Surgery.
The role will involve undertaking ward-based clinical duties to support the patient pathway, providing both pre-operative and post-operative management of cardiac surgical patients in collaboration with the surgical team. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, clinical assessment, diagnosis, management and escalation of deteriorating patients, referral to and liaison with the multidisciplinary team and other specialties, and communication with primary care services. The team also provides care for heart and lung transplant patients in collaboration with the transplant team.
The post holder will be required to comply with all Trust ACP governance standards, policies and procedures. Qualified ACPs will undertake a role comprising of 90% clinical practice and 10% non-clinical activity, supporting the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice.

Qualifications
Essential
- Professional Healthcare Registration with a UK Regulatory Body (NMC / HCPC / GPC)
- Post Graduate Qualification in specific specialty or equivalent experience
- MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice/ Level 7 equivalent portfolio or minimum of 120 CATs and working towards full MSc (must cover all 4 Pillars of advanced clinical practice)--
- Portfolio must include evidence of health assessment module at Level 7
- Non-Medical Prescribing Course -- where applicable to registration
- Advanced Life Support Qualification / Cardiac Life Support
- Recognised Teaching & Assessing/Mentoring Qualification / Course
Desirable
- Knowledge of the national and local NHS healthcare agenda and its implications
Experience
Essential
- Extensive post-registration experience at a senior level (Band 7 or above) in specialty area including significant and relevant senior clinical and leadership experience
- Evidence / experience of working in an MDT within a healthcare provider service
- Evidence of on-going CPD
- Evidence of teaching in a variety of environments
- A sound knowledge of professional priorities and issues relating to NHS care provision
- A knowledgeable clinician with ability to ensure clinical governance is embedded in practice
- Sound understanding of evidence-based practice and its application
