Job Summary
An exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated CNS to lead and develop our specialist nursing colorectal service across Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope hospitals. Advanced colorectal experience is essential. You will provide expert clinical leadership, develop a team, drive service improvement, aligning medical and nursing expertise to optimise patient care and build a world-class service. The post holder will demonstrate a high level of expertise within the specialist service providing advice, education and support to staff, patients, their families and carers. They will have overall managerial responsibility for a defined service of Clinical Nurse Specialists as well as responsibility for leading the ongoing development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service; this includes the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.
This is for 30 hours per week.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
- Practice autonomously within their defined specialty to provide patient-centered quality care.
- Encompass the skills of advanced clinical assessment, examination, diagnosis, and treatment within an agreed scope of practice.
- Ensure safe treatment, referral, follow up, and discharge of patients within their designated specialty.
- Act as a specialist resource and provide specialist advice in relation to care of patients in their specialty.
- Provide a range of educational and training programs for the multidisciplinary team, patients, families, and carers.
The post holder's job plan should deliver a minimum of 50% clinical component and 50% related to service management, education, and research.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Adult/Child Nurse on the NMC Register.
- Professional knowledge acquired through a postgraduate degree/supplemented by specialist training, experience, short courses to master's level equivalent.
Desirable
- Non-Medical Prescribing Course or willingness to undertake where this is a requirement of the role.
Experience
Essential
- Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC.
- Willingness to become a practice supervisor/assessor or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment.
- Extensive post-registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 7 or above in the defined or associated specialty.
- Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level.
- Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator.
- Evidence of achievements and career development in the current post and of ongoing professional development/competence.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to the specialty.
- Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programs and teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
- Experience in service development.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment.
- Experience of patient service user advocacy role.
- Experience of resource and budgetary management.
- Experience of leading on the writing/updating of organizational Policy/Procedure/Guidelines associated with the specialty/field. Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients/relatives/care staff.
- Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty and can translate this into local practice reflected in organizational policy/procedure and service delivery.
- Has understanding/experience of the principles of Safeguarding.
- Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.
Desirable
- Awareness of current research related to all aspects of the specialty including oncology, stoma care, functional bowel, and intestinal failure.

- Ability to explain the requirement to balance the clinical caseload.
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of healthcare professionals on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skills.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage/prioritize own workload.
- Competent in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required.
- Ability to work under pressure across competing priorities.
- Ability to lead clinical audit, analyze information, and develop robust, measurable action plans to support improvement/change.
- Evidence of ability to compile reports and documents for internal/external communication.
- Knowledge of current evidence-based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development.
- Ability to lead and manage a team.
- Ability to adapt behavior to changing circumstances.
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
- Ability to communicate articulately and motivate others.
- Evidence of a flexible and innovative approach to service delivery and development.
