This Associate Director of Operations role offers a genuine opportunity to grow, develop and make a visible impact at one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country. The current postholder is leaving after three successful years, having grown in the role and secured promotion, demonstrating the scale, profile and development potential this opportunity can offer.
Working directly with Yma Choudhury, Managing Director for Group Clinical Support Services (GCSS), you will hold a senior operational leadership role at the centre of patient flow, clinical delivery and organisational performance. You will drive pace, grip and improvement across a critical portfolio, with a focus on Imaging, Labs, Medical Physics and Pharmacy.
GCSS is often described as the spine of UHB. Its services touch every service user, from X-rays and blood tests to medicines, diagnostics and specialist diagnostic support that enables clinical teams to provide safe, timely and effective care.
UHB is moving forward with renewed ambition, building on improvements in staff experience, patient experience, partnership working and its recent CQC journey. You will help us use our scale to strengthen services and work effectively with partners across Birmingham, Solihull and the wider system.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
