Theatre Practitioner

The Theatre Practitioner is responsible for delivering high-quality, safe, and efficient care in the Post Anaesthetic Care (Recovery) and Enhanced Care Unit (ECU) in a private healthcare setting. This role provides high-quality patient care within the ECU and Recovery areas, working closely with the wider theatre team to ensure safe and effective perioperative care. The post holder will support junior colleagues and students, maintain compliance with policies, SOPs and mandatory training, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the service.

The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver seamless patient care, optimise operational efficiency, and maintain professional and private-sector standards. Professional accountability is maintained in line with the NMC / HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, high-quality care for patients in Recovery and ECU, including Level 1–3 patients.
  • Monitor, assess, and manage patients’ recovery following anaesthesia or critical care interventions.
  • Work closely with Anaesthetists, Intensivists, Surgeons, and MDT members to deliver safe patient care.
  • Participate in on-call and night shift rotations as required.
  • Actively participate in emergency response teams, including allocated resuscitation roles and daily safety huddles.
  • Conduct pre-use equipment checks and report faults promptly.
  • Uphold infection prevention and control standards and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous documentation of care in line with organisational policy.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, and administration of medications.

Leadership & People Management

  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision for junior staff, agency, and bank colleagues on shift.
  • Mentor and support the development of staff, including orientation and competency assessment for new starters and students.
  • Conduct staff appraisals and contribute to personal development planning.
  • Promote a positive team culture, supporting cohesion, motivation, and professional behaviour.
  • Ensure 100% compliance with mandatory training, policies, and SOPs across the team.

MDT Collaboration & Team Support

  • Work collaboratively as part of the MDT, ensuring effective communication, handover, and shared decision-making.
  • Support colleagues during periods of high activity or staffing pressure.
  • Promote a culture of patient-centred care and team accountability.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Adhere to all organisational policies, SOPs, and private-sector regulatory standards.
  • Ensure practice aligns with national guidance, including NICE, NatSSIPs, LocSSIPs, NCEPOD, and RCoA recommendations.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and risks promptly; contribute to investigations and learning outcomes.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and service reviews.
  • Maintain confidentiality and compliance with GDPR.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in high dependency or critical care settings.
  • Experience managing Level 1–3 patients in Recovery or ECU.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong clinical reasoning, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and supporting junior staff and students.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • ILS qualification.
  • Commitment to 100% compliance with mandatory training, SOPs, and organisational policies.
  • ALS qualification (or commitment to work towards).
  • HDU / ITU course (or commitment to work towards).
  • Mentorship / Practice Assessor qualification.
  • EPALS qualification.
