Overview
Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the behavioral health patient safety attendant will provide care to a patient by sitting with and diligently watching the patient while meeting the established criteria in accordance with established methods and procedures of the Medical Center.
Responsibilities
- Maintain continuous visual observation of assigned patients to ensure a safe and secure environment at all times.
- Monitor and report changes in patient behavior, mental status, condition, or activities to the Registered Nurse (RN) immediately.
- Adhere to all patient safety protocols, including Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Monitoring procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment, reporting maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Follow infection prevention and control practices, including universal precautions.
- Accurately document patient observations and activities on required monitoring records and observation logs.
- Provide clear and accurate shift-to-shift reports, communicating patient status, observations, and changes in care plans.
- Use verbal redirection and approved de-escalation techniques to support patient safety and manage challenging behaviors.
- Establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while interacting with patients.
- Provide patients with routine explanations regarding care and activities while refraining from counseling or offering personal opinions.
- Immediately notify nursing staff when patient assistance or intervention is required.
- Escort patients to diagnostic tests, procedures, therapeutic activities, and other scheduled appointments as needed.
- Demonstrate focused attention on patient observation duties, minimizing distractions and maintaining vigilance throughout the shift.
- Uphold organizational values and standards of professionalism, compassion, respect, and patient-centered care.
- Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members to support quality patient care.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

- High School diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within 6 months of hire date.
- Must read the BBMC Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Protocols and successfully complete the accompanying test.
- CPI certified.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset.
- Basic Computer skills.
