BMS Estimating Engineer Job Description
About the Role
As an Estimator at Imperium Building Systems, you'll create accurate and detailed cost estimates and initial designs for smart building technology projects. You'll collaborate closely with our technical team, external consultants, and clients to ensure proposals are comprehensive, competitive, and tailored precisely to customer requirements.
Project Specific Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation: Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for smart building technology systems, including labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Project Assessment: Review project specifications, technical drawings, and documentation to fully understand project scope, identify key requirements, and inform accurate costing.
- Vendor Coordination: Source, review, and negotiate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with specifications.
- Proposal Development: Develop clear, comprehensive, and competitive bid proposals, addressing all client requirements effectively.
- Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with projects and propose practical strategies to mitigate these.
- Client Interaction: Engage proactively with clients to clarify project details, discuss estimates, and resolve any queries or concerns.
- Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate records of estimates, bid proposals, revisions, and related correspondence.
- Collaboration & Support: Closely coordinate with project managers, design engineers, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure project estimates align with ongoing project activities and variations.

General Responsibilities
- Train and mentor staff at various levels within the business.
- Contribute actively to the creation of Imperium Academy training documentation.
- Stay updated on industry developments, continuously striving to deliver cost-effective and high-quality systems.
- Maintain professional competence through ongoing development and training.
- Work responsibly, acknowledging personal competencies and limitations.
- Support colleagues raising genuine concerns about risks, malpractice, or wrongdoing.
- Adopt sustainable practices to minimise waste and environmental impact.
Qualifications & Experience Required
Essential Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in an estimation role, specifically related to Building Management Systems (BMS).
Desirable Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Formal training or certification in estimation methodologies and processes.

Experience
- Demonstrated experience estimating complex technology projects, including BEMS, lighting control systems, networking, AV solutions, and home automation systems.
- Skilled in interpreting detailed technical drawings, schematics, and project specifications.
- Prior experience in design, installation, or commissioning phases of smart building systems is advantageous.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong technical understanding of smart building technologies such as BMS, HVAC, AV, IT Networks, and Lighting Controls.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy in all estimations and proposals.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for clear client, supplier, and internal stakeholder interactions.
- Proven negotiation skills to secure favourable pricing and terms from vendors.
- Proficient in industry-standard estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with regulatory standards, including BS7671, CIBSE guidelines, and quality assurance best practices.
- Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and enthusiasm to learn new technologies and estimation methods.
