Bench Hand/Sheet Metal Worker/Toolmaker/Patternmaker

Due to retirement and increasing workload, a position has come available for Bench Hand/Sheet Metal Worker/Toolmaker/Patternmaker. Other engineering disciplines will be considered if skills are transferable.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Bench Hand role based in Coven Heath. The Bench Hand will be responsible for the assembly, fitting, finishing of pressings, and modification of tools, jigs, fixtures, and press tools to precise specifications. Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Manual filing, drilling, tapping, grinding, and deburring
  • Basic inspection and measurement using hand tools and gauges
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Collaborating with toolmakers and machinists
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work area

Non-Production work includes:

  • 1 off / Jobbing work
  • Bespoke Semi/Low volume Production work
  • Aerospace, Automotive Tooling in various materials
  • Pressings & Classic car work

Qualifications

  • Strong practical bench skills, including hand fitting, filing, drilling, and assembly of tools, jigs, fixtures, and press tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and use measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, and gauges.
  • Experience in a precision engineering, toolroom, or manufacturing environment, ideally working with press tools and similar components.
  • Good understanding of workshop health and safety practices and commitment to maintaining a safe, organized work area.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a methodical approach to quality and accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
  • Relevant vocational training or apprenticeship in engineering, toolmaking, or a related discipline is beneficial.

Hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 7.30am till 4.00pm
  • Fridays: 7.00am - 1.00pm
  • Plus overtime when required
