Company Description
Why work for UKTC?
United Kingdom Testing and Certification (UKTC) offers rewarding technical work that makes buildings better for people and the environment. Although invisible to the average person, Passive Fire Protection is a fundamental part of the buildings we all live and work in and saves countless lives.
Your work at UKTC will be diverse and allow you to enhance your practical skills through the use of tools and laboratory instruments as well as challenge yourself academically through learning about international test standards and regulations. You will interact with customers from the Passive Fire Protection industry every day allowing you the opportunity to educate them as well as learn from them.
Job Description
Put your practical joinery skills to work in a more rewarding environment.
UKTC is looking for practical people with joinery, workshop manufacturing or window and door installation experience to join our fire testing laboratory just outside East Kilbride.
This is not a traditional laboratory role and you do not need any previous laboratory or fire testing experience.
It is a hands-on construction role where you will use practical skills every day, working from drawings and instructions to build and install specimens that will be subjected to fire resistance testing.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
Graduate Consultant — 2026 Scheme
Why you're a good match
StrongYour economics background and your summer at a regional bank line up with what PwC looks for on the consulting scheme. Applications close in four weeks.
See breakdownIt searches the market for you
Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The role could suit an experienced bench joiner looking for a new challenge, a window or door manufacturing operative looking to develop their skills, or a site joiner who wants the stability of working from one permanent location.
Who could this role suit?
We would particularly like to hear from:
- Bench or workshop joiners, particularly those working within window, door or construction product manufacturing
- Time-served joiners looking to move away from travelling between construction sites into a permanent place of work
- Experienced window and door installers
- Joiners' mates or semi-skilled construction operatives with good practical skills
- People confident using hand and power tools who can measure, cut, assemble and install accurately
You do not need to be a fully qualified joiner. Practical ability, attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions safely are more important to us.
What you'll be doing
Most of your work will take place within our laboratory and construction areas at our permanent East Kilbride facility.
You will prepare constructions and test specimens for fire resistance testing. This can include building timber and metal-framed constructions, measuring and cutting plasterboard and other materials, and assisting with the installation of doors, windows and other construction products.

Get help with your application
Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
You will also help dismantle specimens after testing, maintain tools and equipment and keep the laboratory and build areas safe and organised.
The work is practical, structured and often repeatable. Accuracy matters. A small difference in how something is constructed can affect the outcome of a fire test, so we need people who take pride in getting things right.
Qualifications
You should be comfortable using hand and power tools, measuring and cutting materials accurately and carrying out practical construction or assembly work.
You will need to be able to read and follow written instructions, work safely, maintain a good standard of workmanship and work effectively as part of a team.
Experience of joinery, partition construction, window and door installation, workshop manufacturing or similar practical construction work would be particularly relevant.
A forklift licence would be useful but is not essential.
