About Reading Bike Hub
Reading Bike Hub is a community-focused cycling space supporting local residents through bicycle repair, cycle hire, creative activities, and community projects.
We are looking for a reliable and friendly mid-level Bicycle Mechanic to join our weekend team. The role combines hands-on mechanical work with customer service and supporting our weekend cycle hire operation.
The Role
The Weekend Bicycle Mechanic will be responsible for keeping our hire bikes safe and well maintained, while also supporting customers who visit the Hub at weekends.
You'll need to be confident working independently, diagnosing common bicycle problems, and carrying out repairs to a good standard. Just as importantly, you'll be comfortable talking to customers and helping people who may have limited knowledge of bicycle mechanics.
Key Responsibilities
Hire Bike Scheme
- Carry out regular safety checks and maintenance of the Hub's hire bikes.
- Inspect bikes before and after hire.
- Carry out routine servicing and adjustments.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical issues.
- Maintain brakes, gears, chains, tyres, wheels, and other components.
- Identify bikes requiring more substantial repairs and report these to the appropriate person.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs where required.
- Ensure hire bikes are safe, clean, and ready for customers.
- Identify worn or damaged components before they become a safety issue.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
