Pay Rate: £19.40 per hour (via PayStream Umbrella Company)

Are you a confident cyclist who enjoys working with children and making a difference in your local community? We are looking for enthusiastic and safety-conscious Bikeability Instructors to deliver cycle training to children in schools, helping them develop essential road safety skills and confidence when riding on today's roads.

This is a rewarding, term-time role where you'll play a key part in promoting safe cycling and active travel among young people.

About The Role

As a Bikeability Instructor, you will deliver practical cycle training sessions to children at schools across the local area, teaching them how to ride safely and confidently on roads and in traffic environments.

You will work closely with schools, pupils, and fellow instructors to create a positive learning experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Bikeability road safety and cycle training to children and young people.
  • Teach safe cycling techniques in a clear, engaging, and supportive manner.
  • Conduct practical training sessions both on school sites and on local roads.
  • Manage small groups of children in outdoor environments.
  • Carry out risk assessments and ensure safe working practices at all times.
  • Act as a positive role model and ambassador for road safety.
  • Travel to different school locations within the local area.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Confident and competent cyclist, including experience riding on public roads.
  • Own bicycle available for use during training delivery.
  • Teaching, instructing, coaching, or training experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to explain instructions clearly and confidently to children.
  • Strong awareness of road safety and risk management.
  • Reliable, professional, and adaptable approach.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel between school locations.

Desirable

  • Experience working with children or young people (schools, coaching, youth work, sports clubs, etc.).
  • Existing Bikeability or National Standard Instructor qualification.

Training & Development

No Bikeability qualification? No problem.

Required

Successful candidates will be required to complete a fully funded Bikeability Instructor training course, provided by the council. The programme lasts approximately 3 to 4 days and includes:

Working Pattern

  • Term-time only
  • Plus 3 weeks during the summer holidays
  • Primarily school-hours working pattern (weekday 8.30am to 3.30pm)
  • No scheduled classes between November and mid-March
  • Peak delivery periods are during the spring and summer terms
