The Position

In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility, and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

Roche has a strong pipeline of Ophthalmology medicines and is expanding its portfolio in retinal vascular diseases, dry age-related macular degeneration and front of the eye diseases. With global partnerships and collaborations, Roche offers ample opportunities for drug development and career growth in Ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmology unit of Roche is rapidly growing and innovating and therefore offers the position of a Biomarker Experimental Medicine Leader (BEML).

We are offering the opportunity to join our Ophthalmology biomarker team. Currently, we are a team of six biomarker leaders with different backgrounds in biochemistry, cell-biology, molecular biology, experimental ophthalmology and drug development that we apply to diseases like age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye disease, and others.

We are looking for a biomarker expert with strong experience in translational science that can complement our team as an individual contributor and matrix team leader.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

In this role, you will be accountable for the development and implementation of end-to-end translational biomarker strategies during the preclinical and clinical phases of drug development programs.

  • You will lead biomarker-related activities aimed at quantifying drug response and selecting patients for personalized healthcare, acting as Matrix Leader of the BioX (Bioanalytical, Biosample and Biomarker) Expert Team.
  • You will assume accountability for research collaborations designed to benefit multiple programs, in line with the relevant project and disease area strategies.
  • You will be an active member of preclinical and clinical drug development and project teams.
  • You will provide scientific and strategic input into the overall drug and clinical development plans and ensure that biomarker-related activities are fit for purpose and support decision-making within the context of the preclinical and clinical development strategy.
  • You will collaborate with academic, industry, internal and external experts, as well as service providers, on biomarker, experimental medicine and natural history studies to identify and evaluate disease biomarkers and novel clinical trial endpoints.

Who you are

  • You hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have at least 7 years of well-documented experience in a research, industry or clinical setting. This experience should include at least 3 years of biomarker-related work in the context of drug development, preferably involving protein, metabolite, genetic, imaging or functional biomarkers.
  • You are able to lead cross-functional matrix teams, drive team decisions and project needs, and prioritize your work to achieve both individual goals and team deliverables.
  • You have a good understanding of methodological and bioanalytical approaches and are able to generate, integrate and interpret preclinical, clinical and drug development data to enable proof of biology, dose selection, patient selection and safety across clinical programs.
  • You are a proactive team player who integrates easily into a global organization. You have strong networking skills, are capable of working independently, and enjoy contributing to a collaborative environment where success is driven by the team rather than by individual heroes.
  • You have strong presentation and communication skills and are fluent in English.
  • You are an innovative and strategic thinker who sees the big picture. You are goal-oriented, have a strong drive and analytical mindset, and are motivated to achieve excellence. You are also able to distill complex topics, develop solutions and articulate them clearly.
  • Prior experience in Ophthalmology would be a valuable asset. Experience with omics data interpretation, ocular imaging or functional readouts would be an additional advantage.
