Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated Medical Equipment Technician to join the Trust Equipment Service at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a vital role responsible for the repair, maintenance and performance of a wide range of medical technologies that support clinical diagnosis, treatment and patient care across acute, community and primary healthcare settings.

Working as part of a team of multi-skilled specialist engineers and technicians, you will help ensure that essential medical equipment remains safe, reliable and available for use, minimising downtime and supporting the delivery of high-quality healthcare. The service also provides expert engineering, technical and equipment management support to partner organisations through established Service Level Agreements.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance, inspections, servicing and repairs on a diverse range of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The role requires the ability to diagnose and resolve faults efficiently, ensuring equipment is returned to service quickly while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and compliance.

  • You will support and maintain a broad portfolio of technologies, including electrical, electronic, mechanical, software-based and medical gas equipment.
  • Through proactive maintenance and timely fault resolution, you will help maximise equipment reliability, minimise downtime and ensure clinical services can continue to operate effectively.

Working as part of a team of multi-skilled specialist engineers and technicians, you will take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of your own work, maintaining detailed service records and adhering to relevant legislation, standards and Trust policies. You will also provide technical advice and support to clinical users, promoting the safe and effective use of medical equipment across a variety of healthcare settings.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

The role contributes directly to the delivery of patient care by ensuring critical medical technologies remain safe, reliable and fit for purpose. In addition, you will support the Trust Equipment Service in delivering a comprehensive equipment management and maintenance service to Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and partner healthcare organisations through established Service Level Agreements.

  • Be responsible for carrying out the preventative maintenance (PM) and electrical safety inspection of a wide range of patient connected electromedical equipment, with a degree of autonomy and responsibility.
  • To support the testing and commissioning of new medical equipment, ensuring that equipment is safe for clinical use and to monitor the quality of equipment supplied by manufacturers and other commercial organisations.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Qualifications Essential

  • Level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent training and experience

Desirable

  • HNC in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent

Experience Essential

  • Demonstrable post qualification experience servicing electrical / electronic equipment

Desirable

  • Experience on a broad range of medical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the medical quality standards:
    • MHRA Managing Medical Devices (Guidance for healthcare and social services organisations)
    • ISO 9001:2015 (Quality management systems)
    • IEC 60601-1 (Medical electrical equipment Part 1: General requirements for safety)
