About the Role

We are looking for an HCPC-registered Band 5 Biomedical Scientist who is keen to gain hands-on experience in mass spectrometry within the specialist field of therapeutic drug monitoring. This is an ideal opportunity for a newly qualified BMS to start their journey or for an experienced BMS to gain some hands-on experience with mass spectrometry and therapeutic drug monitoring.

The Immunosuppression Monitoring Service at Harefield Hospital is recruiting to a full-time, 6-month fixed-term position (FTC end date: Friday 28th February 2027).

Responsibilities

  • Manual extraction and preparation of blood samples prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS.
  • Involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including specimen reception, stock control, review of analytical data, instrument maintenance, and result reporting.

Requirements

  • Completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio.
  • Experience working within a Biochemistry or Blood Sciences laboratory.
  • Previous experience of HPLC and mass spectrometry is desirable, but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Location and Hours

  • The post is based at Harefield Hospital, outer London (UB9 6JH) with the laboratory located within the Magdi Yacoub Institute Heart Science Centre.
  • The laboratory operates Monday to Friday, 08:30–16:45.

Job Details

  • Involves the manual extraction and preparation of blood samples prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS.
  • Requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • You will be required to pipette multiple batches of between 15 and 30 samples per day using a liquid crash extraction method involving centrifugation and supernatant decanting.

Laboratory Equipment

  • Operates two clinical mass spectrometry analysers coupled to dual-channel 2-D high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems.
  • Platforms used for the analysis of therapeutic drugs, including immunosuppressants, antifungals, and inotropes.

Daily Activities

  • Involved in all day-to-day laboratory activities, including specimen reception, use of the EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), stock control, data review, instrument maintenance, result validation, and authorisation.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining an analytical bench, while also supporting colleagues and assisting staff at all grades when required.

  • Work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

About Harefield Hospital

  • Based in Uxbridge, Northwest London, the hospital is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants.

  • At our dedicated heart attack centre, we deal with heart attack emergencies from outer north-west London, providing primary angioplasty in our specialist catheter laboratories.
