Specialist Biomedical Scientists in Microbiology (Band 6)

We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary Specialist Biomedical Scientists in Microbiology (Band 6) to join our dynamic and thriving team. The Microbiology service is a UKAS ISO 15189: 2022 accredited laboratory based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and serves within the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN). Microbiology has a strong training ethos linked to career development and progression.

Applicants should be effective leaders, have significant Microbiology knowledge and experience, and have a good track record of managing staff and laboratory resources. You must be able to demonstrate achievement of targets, of implementing service developments and service transformation initiatives, a high attention to detail and excellent communication skills.

Please note that if you require a Certificate of Sponsorship to work in the UK you must declare this on your application form, even if you currently have a certificate of sponsorship or a work permit for another role and are already working in the country. Please note we are only able to sponsor candidates for a Skilled Worker Visa for roles that are eligible at the time of application.

The suitable candidate must be HCPC registered and hold, or be working towards, an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology.

Job Purpose

  • To undertake scientific tasks within all appropriate sections of the department as delegated by Senior staff including when appropriate, monitoring the performance of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS.
  • To process laboratory samples and produce timely, accurate and relevant results and reports in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • To undertake routine analytical work involving both automated and manual techniques.
  • To make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the laboratories considering health and safety and other relevant legislation.
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures within the Department to enable the service to run effectively, and to ensure it complies with legal requirements.
  • Assist in service developments including evaluation of new assays.
  • The postholder will be expected to use initiative in all areas of work.
  • Support Weekend working and out-of-hours emergency on-call service

Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN) is a formal partnership of seven laboratories across three pathology services in four acute Trusts. Our 1000 colleagues provide services across the health and care sector to a population of nearly 2 million.

KMPN are at an exciting point of our network development with a recommendation to form a joint venture across the four Trusts leading transformation. Our projects including single IT solutions, procurement and digital projects, to ensure our services are able to meet growing demand for our service users, patients and communities.
