Biosolids Operations Manager

Contract Type: Permanent, full time

Hours of Work: 40 hours, Monday - Friday (with occasional Saturday mornings)

Salary: £48-£50K plus Bonus

Benefits: Company vehicle, pension, life assurance, cycle to work scheme, EAP scheme

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Biosolids Operations Manager to lead the safe, compliant and efficient recycling and beneficial use of lime-treated biosolids to agricultural land.

This is a key operational leadership role responsible for managing the end-to-end delivery of biosolids recycling operations, ensuring full compliance with environmental legislation, Biosolids Assurance Scheme requirements, health and safety standards and company procedures.

Working closely with farmers, landowners, contractors, regulators and internal stakeholders, you will develop sustainable agricultural outlets, oversee logistics and contractor performance, manage operational budgets and ensure the highest standards of environmental stewardship.

This is a varied role combining operational management, agricultural liaison, contract management and stakeholder engagement, offering the opportunity to make a significant contribution to sustainable recycling and resource recovery activities.

The role briefly encompasses the following duties:

  • Lead the day-to-day management of biosolids recycling operations, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient delivery.
  • Lead on all HSQE aspects of projects, ensuring Hargreaves' high standards of health, safety, quality and environmental performance are consistently maintained.
  • Develop and maintain a sustainable agricultural landbank through strong relationships with farmers, landowners and agronomists.
  • Manage contractors, haulage providers and spreading operations to meet operational and service requirements.
  • Coordinate biosolids movements, storage and land application activities to maximise recycling opportunities and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, Biosolids Assurance Scheme requirements, permits and health & safety standards.
  • Manage operational budgets, contractor performance and cost control measures.
  • Act as the key liaison between customers, contractors, regulators and internal stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement, environmental stewardship and operational excellence across all activities.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience in waste management, environmental services, biosolids recycling, utilities or agriculture.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural practices, nutrient management and land application of biosolids.
  • Experience managing contractors, operational programmes and budgets.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting requirements and the Biosolids Assurance Scheme.
  • Experience building relationships with farmers, landowners and regulatory bodies.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Commercially aware with strong budgeting and cost-control capabilities.
  • Organised, self-motivated and able to manage a geographically dispersed operation.
  • Proactive problem solver with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, environmental compliance and customer service.
  • Able to build trust and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.

Qualifications:

  • Degree, HND or equivalent experience in Agriculture, Environmental Management, Waste Management or a related discipline.
  • FACTS qualified (desirable) or the commitment to attain this qualification.
  • WAMITAB Level 4 Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) desirable or willing to work towards achieving the qualification.
  • NEBOSH qualification (desirable).
  • First Aid at work certificate (desirable).
  • Full UK driving licence.
