This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a BJAK - Back End, AI based in United Kingdom.
As a Backend Engineer focused on AI platforms, you will build the core infrastructure powering next-generation intelligent productivity applications. You will design and develop scalable backend systems that enable AI-driven workflows, automation, and real-time user experiences. Working at the intersection of backend engineering, distributed systems, and artificial intelligence, you will solve complex technical challenges around performance, reliability, and scalability. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to products that redefine how users interact with technology by enabling AI to complete meaningful tasks autonomously. You will collaborate with talented engineers across product, infrastructure, and AI teams in a fast-moving, innovation-focused environment.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services that support AI-powered product features and intelligent workflows.
- Build scalable infrastructure for AI interactions, including inference pipelines, orchestration layers, and backend systems supporting large-scale usage.
- Create reliable APIs and services used across web, desktop, and mobile applications.
- Optimize system performance through improvements in latency, throughput, caching, batching, and streaming capabilities.
- Develop and maintain monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability solutions to ensure production reliability.
- Troubleshoot distributed systems, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement solutions that improve platform stability.
- Collaborate closely with product, infrastructure, and AI engineering teams to deliver high-quality features and continuously improve system architecture.
- Contribute to the design decisions and technical foundations of an AI-native platform built for long-term scalability.

Requirements
- Strong backend engineering experience building and operating production-grade systems.
- Proven experience developing high-throughput and low-latency distributed applications.
- Advanced Python programming skills; experience with Node.js is considered a plus.
- Hands-on experience deploying and managing services using Kubernetes and Docker.
- Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases in scalable production environments.
- Familiarity with AI infrastructure concepts, including LLM inference, embeddings, multimodal models, or similar technologies.
- Strong understanding of backend architecture, APIs, system reliability, and performance optimization.
- Pragmatic engineering mindset with a focus on delivering reliable, maintainable software.
- Experience with AI platforms, agent workflows, inference optimization, or large-scale AI services is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with technologies such as PyTorch, OpenAI models, Anthropic models, or open-source LLM ecosystems is an advantage.
