Platform Housing Group - Board Member – Assets & Sustainability Committee

The Opportunity

Platform Housing Group is seeking an experienced Board Member to join the organisation at an important point in its development. Alongside contributing fully to the strategic leadership and governance of Platform Housing Group, the successful candidate will join the Assets & Sustainability Committee, which has responsibility for some of the organisation’s most fundamental areas, including asset management strategy, building safety, landlord health and safety compliance, property investment and the wider sustainability agenda.

About the Role

As a member of the Platform Housing Group Board, you will share responsibility for corporate decision-making, provide constructive challenge and support to the Executive, and contribute to the organisation’s strategic direction. You will help ensure Platform continues to meet its legal, regulatory and governance responsibilities while effectively managing risk, maintaining strong financial oversight and delivering against its objectives. Board Members are expected to contribute their experience, expertise and insight while acting at all times in the best interests of Platform Housing Group.

The role will have a particular focus on the Assets & Sustainability Committee. The committee oversees the organisation’s approach to its existing homes, including asset strategy, investment, repairs and maintenance, building and landlord safety, stock condition, property risk and sustainability. As Platform’s governance arrangements continue to evolve, including the development of a new Customer Experience Committee, there will also be an important role to play in ensuring effective alignment between customer, asset and investment priorities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Strategic Challenge

Platform is looking to strengthen the strategic capability around the committee table. The successful candidate will be able to look beyond individual asset or operational decisions and consider the organisation’s wider priorities, investment choices and strategic trade-offs. You will bring the judgement to question whether Platform is investing in the right homes, at the right level and at the right time, while ensuring that Executive plans are supported by robust evidence, appropriate data and clear assurance.

This appointment comes at a time of wider change across the organisation’s governance and leadership arrangements. There is an opportunity for the new Board Member to contribute to the continued development of the Assets & Sustainability Committee, helping strengthen strategic planning, programme oversight, data and assurance while building on the operational expertise already present within Platform.

About You

We are particularly interested in candidates who have operated at a senior strategic level and can bring experience of overseeing significant asset, infrastructure or investment portfolios. This could include experience as a Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director or in another senior leadership position where you have been required to consider organisational priorities across operations, assets, customers, investment and financial sustainability. Strong social housing experience would be valuable, although candidates from relevant areas such as commercial real estate or infrastructure may also be considered where they can demonstrate an understanding of the strategic and governance context of the role.

You will be comfortable challenging at Board level while remaining appropriately focused on governance rather than operational delivery. You should be able to interpret complex information, distinguish between risk and opportunity and establish effective relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. Experience of balancing social purpose with commercial considerations will be important, as will high standards of ethical behaviour, sound judgement and a commitment to excellent customer outcomes.

Previous Board or Non-Executive experience would be particularly welcomed given the need for the successful candidate to make an early contribution. Candidates seeking their first Non-Executive appointment may also be considered where they can demonstrate substantial C-suite or equivalent executive experience and a clear ability to transition successfully into a strategic governance role.
