Sound Roots
Sound Roots is a registered charity (#1192064) dedicated to supporting, developing and promoting folk, roots and acoustic music. As Arts Council England’s leading organisation creating career pathways into these genres, we deliver a wide range of initiatives that nurture artists, connect industry professionals and grow audiences. These include our flagship events, Manchester Folk Festival and English Folk Expo, as well as artist mentoring, The Folk Album of the Year Award, The Official Folk Albums Chart and more.
We also work extensively across Greater Manchester, playing a strategic role in growing the music economy, with a particular focus on our home in Rochdale.
If you have a relationship with, or a working understanding of, folk music in England and would like to help us nurture a vibrant, inclusive music community for everyone, we would love to hear from you. We are especially interested to hear from applicants with expertise in partnerships and networks, music sector knowledge and insights, international development and finance.
We are also particularly keen to receive applications from people of the global majority, LGBTQIA+ people, disabled, neurodivergent and working class people and people with caring responsibilities. These lived experiences and identities are underrepresented in our sector and have less access to spaces of decision making in our local communities.

Role Purpose
The role ensures that Sound Roots operates legally and in line with its governing documents, delivers its core objectives (including commitments to funders such as Arts Council England) and is effectively governed through clear strategy, policy and performance oversight.
It also involves safeguarding the organisation’s reputation and values, ensuring strong financial management and investment of funds and supporting sound administration, while contributing specialist expertise to board decisions.
