Tortoise in a Nutshell Board of Trustees

Tortoise in a Nutshell is seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to join our Board of Trustees.

We are looking for enthusiastic, thoughtful and engaged individuals who share our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in cultural life. You do not need to have previous experience as a charity trustee or to have worked in the arts. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who can bring different perspectives, experiences and skills to our Board.

About Tortoise in a Nutshell

Tortoise in a Nutshell is an Edinburgh-based Charity creating innovative, original and accessible visual theatre. Since forming in 2010, we have developed and toured work across Scotland, the UK and internationally, creating performances that combine visual storytelling, puppetry, design and immersive sound.

Our work is driven by a belief that everyone, regardless of their background, means or circumstances, should be able to participate in the cultural life of their community. Alongside creating exceptional visual theatre, we develop participatory and community-based projects, professional development opportunities and research that explores how we can make cultural experiences more accessible.

Our work increasingly connects artistic practice with questions of access, participation and social change. We work with communities across Scotland and collaborate with artists and organisations internationally, using our practice to explore new ways of creating and sharing live performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

We are a small, ambitious and passionate organisation, currently at an exciting stage of development as we grow our artistic, community and international work.

About the Role

Our Board of Trustees shares responsibility for the overall governance, strategic direction and sustainability of Tortoise in a Nutshell. Trustees play an important role in helping us think strategically, ensuring good governance and bringing their experience and perspective to the development of the organisation.

We are looking for people who are curious, collaborative and interested in contributing to the future of an ambitious small arts charity. A genuine interest in live performance and in widening access to the arts is important, but previous experience as a charity trustee is not essential.

Who We're Looking For

We are keen to broaden the range of experience and perspectives represented on our Board and particularly welcome expressions of interest from people from diverse backgrounds, communities and lived experiences.

To complement the skills of our existing trustees, we are particularly interested in people with experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • Human resources and people management
  • Finance, accounting or financial management
  • Equalities, diversity, inclusion and access
  • Community engagement or advocacy

We are also interested in hearing from people with other skills, knowledge or perspectives that they feel could contribute to the organisation.

What We Offer

Tortoise in a Nutshell is a friendly, collaborative and supportive organisation. Trustees are welcomed as an active part of our team and will have the opportunity to contribute to an organisation working across artistic practice, community engagement, access, research and international collaboration.

  • Commitment: Four Board meetings per year, with additional ad hoc support as agreed.
  • Location: The Heart of Newhaven, 4–6 Main Street, Edinburgh EH6 4HY, with online attendance possible.
