The Democracy Project is a new, independent and strictly non-partisan Community Interest Company being established with a simple but ambitious purpose:
To strengthen democratic culture by improving understanding, encouraging participation and helping people believe that their voice matters.
Healthy democracy is about much more than voting once every few years. It depends on informed and engaged citizens, strong communities, respectful debate, accountability and people having the confidence to participate in the decisions that affect their lives.
At a time when trust in politics and public institutions is under pressure, many people feel disconnected from decision-making and political debate can seem increasingly dominated by personalities and division. We believe there is an urgent need to reconnect people with democracy itself.
We are now looking for a small number of people to join the Board and help shape The Democracy Project as it develops.

We are interested in hearing from people with experience, knowledge or a genuine interest in areas such as:
- democracy and democratic participation
- social justice and tackling inequality
- education and lifelong learning
- young people and youth engagement
- community development and regeneration
- business, governance or the third sector
- communications, media, culture or sport
- public service and civic life
You do not need to have worked in politics, though an active interest would be beneficial. We particularly want the Board to reflect different professions, communities, generations and life experiences.
What matters is an interest in strengthening democracy and a willingness to bring your own experience, ideas and constructive challenge to the table.
Political independence is fundamental to the project. The Democracy Project will never tell people who to vote for or what to think. Our role is to help people understand democracy, encourage them to participate and give them the confidence to reach their own conclusions. People with current or previous political involvement are not excluded, but every Board member must be committed to maintaining the independence and non-partisan nature of the organisation.

The commitment
This is an unpaid, voluntary Board position.
The Board will meet minimum four times per year, with members providing strategic oversight, ideas, advice and constructive challenge as the organisation develops. Some meetings may be held remotely to make participation easier.
Above all, we are looking for people who share one belief:
Healthy democracies don't happen by accident. They are built by informed, engaged citizens who believe their participation matters.
