Are you passionate about improving addiction treatment, education, and professional standards across the UK?
Addiction Professionals is seeking to appoint two new trustees to join our Board and help guide the next stage of our charity's development. We are particularly interested in hearing from:
- An experienced trustee or governance professional who can strengthen our Board through expertise in charity governance, strategic leadership, and organisational development.
- A new trustee who is passionate about our mission and keen to develop their experience as part of a supportive, collaborative Board. Previous trustee experience is not essential, we welcome applicants with enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and a commitment to good governance.
As a trustee, you'll play a vital role in helping us deliver our vision of a competent, confident, and accredited workforce in the addictions sector, supporting professionals who make a real difference to the lives of people affected by addiction.
Our work includes education, accreditation, professional registration, networking, and championing high standards across the sector.
We're looking for people who can contribute strategically, ask thoughtful questions, work collaboratively, and share our commitment to improving outcomes for individuals, families, and communities affected by addiction.

Background
We are a national charity and our mission is to develop, support, and provide training, education, and accreditation to those working and volunteering in the addiction sector with the aim of raising standards for the benefit of those accessing services and their communities. We seek to promote the positive contributions the addiction sector makes to the wider public.

Objective
As a Trustee and Director of the charity, you will share collective responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of the organisation. Trustees ensure that the charity fulfils its charitable purposes, complies with legal and regulatory requirements, manages its resources responsibly, and operates in the best interests of its beneficiaries.
Trustees work collectively to provide strategic leadership, oversee performance and risk, support the Executive Director, and ensure the charity remains financially sustainable, well governed, and accountable.
Principal Responsibilities
Governance and Strategy
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the charity's strategic direction.
- Ensure the charity pursues its charitable objectives in accordance with its governing document.
- Act in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries at all times.
- Ensure compliance with charity law, company law, and other relevant legislation and regulation.
- Promote high standards of governance, transparency, and accountability.
- Review and approve key organisational policies and ensure they remain fit for purpose.
Board Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in Board meetings and other trustee activities.
- Read Board papers in advance and contribute constructively to discussions and decision-making.
- Exercise independent judgement while supporting collective Board decisions.
- Contribute skills, knowledge, and experience to Board discussions.
- Serve on Board committees or working groups where appropriate.
Oversight and Assurance
- Monitor the charity's performance against its strategic objectives.
- Ensure appropriate systems of governance, risk management, and internal control are in place.
- Review organisational risks and support effective mitigation.
- Ensure the charity manages its resources responsibly and remains financially sustainable.
- Monitor the quality and impact of the charity's services, education, and accreditation activities.
- Hold the Executive Director appropriately accountable while providing support and constructive challenge.

Advocacy and Representation
- Act as an ambassador for the charity and promote its mission and values.
- Support the development of relationships with members, stakeholders, partners, and funders.
- Promote the work of the charity within professional and wider networks where appropriate.
- Uphold the charity's reputation and act with integrity at all times.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality regarding Board discussions and sensitive information.
- Declare and manage any actual or potential conflicts of interest.
- Undertake trustee induction and participate in ongoing training and development where appropriate.
- Keep informed about developments affecting the charity, the voluntary sector, and the addiction field.
- Contribute to Board effectiveness through regular review and continuous improvement.

Essential Requirements
- Understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees (or willingness to learn)
- Strategic thinking and sound judgement
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to collective decision-making
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to analyse information and make balanced decisions
- Integrity, independence, and commitment to high standards of governance
- Willingness to devote sufficient time to the role, including preparing for and attending Board meetings
Time Commitment
- Attendance at approximately four to six Board meetings per year (including preparation).
- Participation in Board committees or working groups where appropriate.
- Attendance at the Annual General Meeting.
- Occasional attendance at charity events or strategic planning sessions.
The anticipated commitment is approximately 6–10 days per year.
