About Fluid Motion Theatre Company
Fluid Motion Theatre Company is an award-winning arts and health charity based in Totton, Hampshire. Founded in 2010 by Ali Gill and Leigh Johnstone, the organisation was created from a belief that theatre and creative activity can help people understand themselves, connect with others, and improve their mental health and wellbeing.
Our work is rooted in lived experience. Fluid Motion was founded by people who experienced poor mental health as children and found creativity to be a powerful tool for coping, expression, and recovery. That experience continues to shape how we work today.
Since opening Totton Creative Hub in 2024, Fluid Motion has developed from a project-based theatre company into a year-round creative wellbeing provider. The hub gives us a visible home on Totton high street, where children, young people, families, and community partners can access creative activity locally and consistently.
We use theatre, arts and craft, dance, music, exhibitions, and creative play to support mental health, confidence, emotional regulation, connection, and personal development. Our work is particularly focused on children and young people aged 0–25, families, and those who may face barriers to accessing arts, culture, community support, or traditional mental health services.
Term: Three Years
Location: Hampshire / England, with hybrid working where appropriate
Time commitment: Approximately 4 x 2 hour Board meetings per year, 1 hour per month specific charity support, Meeting preparation, training, one away day, and where possible and requested involvement in charity activities.

Purpose of the role
Trustees collectively govern Fluid Motion Theatre Company and are responsible for ensuring that the charity fulfils its charitable purposes, acts for public benefit, uses its resources responsibly, and complies with its legal responsibilities.
Trustees bring their experience, knowledge, and perspective to the Board while working collectively to make decisions in the best interests of the charity.
A trustee is not a volunteer member of staff and should not normally become involved in the day-to-day management of the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and review of the charity's strategy.
- Read and understand financial reports.
- Understand the Board's safeguarding responsibilities.
- Attend and prepare for Board meetings.
- Understand and champion Fluid Motion's work.
