BOM Specialist – Engineering Release Management

Role Purpose

The BOM Specialist is responsible for creating, maintaining, validating, and releasing Engineering Bills of Materials (eBOM) and supporting engineering change and release processes across the product development lifecycle. The role ensures that product structures, part information, and configuration data are accurate, complete, and aligned with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, and program requirements.

Key Responsibilities

BOM Management

  • Create, maintain, and manage Engineering Bills of Materials (eBOM) within PLM/PDM systems.
  • Ensure BOM structures are accurate, complete, and aligned to engineering design intent.
  • Support multi-level BOM creation, validation, and maintenance throughout development and production phases.
  • Perform BOM quality checks and resolve structure, quantity, and part usage discrepancies.

Engineering Release Management

  • Manage engineering release activities for parts, assemblies, and product structures.
  • Coordinate the release of engineering data in accordance with defined governance processes and timing plans.
  • Validate engineering change requests and ensure implementation within release systems.
  • Support engineering sign-off processes and release readiness reviews.

Change Management

  • Process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Assess the impact of engineering changes on BOMs, product configurations, manufacturing, and supply chain operations.
  • Track change implementation and ensure timely closure of change actions.
  • Maintain traceability of changes across released product data.

Product Configuration & Data Integrity

  • Support configuration management activities throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Ensure consistency between CAD, BOM, part master data, and engineering documentation.
  • Monitor and improve data quality standards within PLM and ERP systems.
  • Identify and resolve data anomalies, conflicts, and release issues.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Program Management, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
  • Facilitate issue resolution relating to part releases, BOM structures, and engineering changes.
  • Support program milestones by ensuring timely availability of released engineering data.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain release status reports and KPI dashboards.
  • Track release performance metrics, overdue changes, and BOM quality indicators.
  • Support process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing release efficiency and data quality.
  • Contribute to standardization and best practice development across release management activities.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of Bill of Materials (BOM) management and product structures.
  • Knowledge of Engineering Release and Change Management processes.
  • Experience with PLM/PDM systems (e.g., Teamcenter, Windchill, Enovia, 3DEXPERIENCE).
  • Familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
  • Understanding of configuration management principles.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD structures, and technical documentation.

Analytical Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Problem-solving and root cause analysis capabilities.
  • Ability to manage complex product structures and large datasets.
  • Proficiency in Excel and reporting tools.
