Senior Book Editors, Developmental Editors & Publishing Professionals. Remote AI Project
We are seeking experienced Senior Book Editors, Developmental Editors, Acquisitions Editors, Executive Editors, Copy Editors, Line Editors, and Publishing Professionals to contribute to an advanced AI project focused on high-quality manuscript editing and editorial judgment.
No prior AI experience is required. Deep editorial expertise, literary judgment, and experience working with professionally published books are what matter most.
What You’ll Do
- Review and analyze fiction and nonfiction manuscripts
- Provide developmental and structural editorial feedback
- Evaluate narrative structure, pacing, clarity, and organization
- Review author voice, tone, style, and consistency
- Perform advanced line editing and copyediting
- Identify weaknesses in plot, characterization, argument, or narrative progression
- Evaluate thematic continuity across long-form manuscripts
- Identify gaps, contradictions, repetitions, and structural problems
- Recommend meaningful revisions while preserving the author's intended voice
- Review manuscript positioning and potential audience fit
- Evaluate whether content aligns with genre and reader expectations
- Draft detailed editorial letters, margin notes, and revision recommendations
- Create and refine editorial guidelines and quality standards
- Identify cases where edits are technically correct but weaken voice or meaning
- Collaborate asynchronously with project stakeholders and other editorial experts
- Communicate nuanced recommendations through both written and verbal channels

Requirements
- Extensive professional experience in book editing, developmental editing, publishing, manuscript development, or a closely related editorial role
- Significant experience editing professionally published books
- Exceptional command of written English
- Strong understanding of grammar, syntax, literary style, and narrative structure
- Ability to provide sophisticated developmental and line-level feedback
- Strong judgment across long-form content
- Ability to identify subtle narrative and stylistic problems
- Ability to preserve an author's voice while improving effectiveness
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Comfortable providing and discussing nuanced editorial recommendations

Preferred Background
- Senior editorial experience at a recognized publishing house
- Experience working with prominent or established authors
- Editorial involvement with bestselling books
- Editorial involvement with award-winning or critically recognized books
- Experience across multiple fiction or nonfiction genres
- Experience performing developmental editing and line editing
- Experience managing books from manuscript through publication
- Experience writing detailed editorial letters
- Experience with acquisitions or commissioning
- Experience leading editorial teams
- Experience developing editorial standards or style guidelines
- Experience reviewing work produced by other editors
- Experience working directly with authors through multiple revision rounds
This opportunity is ideal for senior editors who can read a manuscript and quickly understand what the author is trying to accomplish, where the manuscript succeeds, where the reader experience breaks down, and which revisions would create the greatest improvement without erasing the author's individual voice.
