Bookkeeper - Sage / CIS / VAT

📍 Aylesbury | Office-based 💷 £24,000–£30,000 | Full-time

Our client is a well-established, family-run accountancy practice in Aylesbury with a strong local reputation and a friendly, collaborative team.

In this role, you’ll complete bookkeeping, VAT returns and associated accounting work for a varied portfolio of clients, working closely with accountants and other bookkeepers to maintain accurate records and ensure deadlines are met.

You’ll also take responsibility for Sage bookkeeping, CIS payments, reconciliations, payroll support and year-end information, making this a varied role for someone who enjoys owning their client work.

About the role

You’ll manage the day-to-day bookkeeping requirements for a portfolio of clients, combining routine transactional work with VAT, CIS, reconciliations and regular client communication.

You’ll have the autonomy to manage your workload while being part of a supportive practice team.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete day-to-day bookkeeping using Sage
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns
  • Manage CIS payments for clients
  • Complete bank and control account reconciliations
  • Reconcile sales ledger, purchase ledger, VAT and PAYE accounts
  • Liaise directly with clients to resolve bookkeeping queries
  • Assist with client payroll processing
  • Prepare year-end information for external accountants
  • Resolve year-end queries and post journals
  • Support with general bookkeeping and administrative duties

What we’re looking for

  • Strong practical experience using Sage
  • Previous experience with CIS payments
  • Experience preparing and submitting VAT returns
  • A good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping
  • Confidence completing bank and control account reconciliations
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable dealing directly with clients and managing deadlines

Nice to have

  • Experience using document-processing technology such as Dext or Hubdoc would be advantageous but isn’t essential.

Best-Fit Candidates / Useful Matching Context

This role could suit someone currently working as a Bookkeeper, Practice Bookkeeper, Accounts Assistant, Accounts Technician, Client Bookkeeper or Senior Bookkeeper.

Candidates from accountancy practices, bookkeeping bureaux, outsourced finance teams or multi-client bookkeeping environments would be particularly relevant.

Experience supporting construction-sector clients or businesses operating under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) would also transfer well.
