Looking for a varied finance role where you'll have real autonomy and become an integral part of a successful business?
Express Recruitment are proud to be supporting a long-established and highly respected business in their search for a Bookkeeper to join the team on a fixed-term contract.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced finance professional who enjoys variety and wants to be involved in far more than just the accounts. As the company's sole finance professional, you'll take ownership of the day-to-day bookkeeping function whilst also supporting payroll, HR administration, project coordination and the wider running of the office. Working closely with the Directors, you'll become a key member of the business, with genuine responsibility and the opportunity to make a real impact across multiple areas.
The successful candidate will need to be confident working independently, as you'll manage the finance function on a day-to-day basis with year-end accounts supported externally. This role would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership, thrives within an SME environment and is happy to get involved wherever needed. The contract is expected to run for approximately 10 months, with the flexibility of working either four or five days per week, depending on your preference.
Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in a standalone finance, bookkeeping or office finance management role within an SME environment
- Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 Accounts is essential (experience with alternative accounting software alone will not be sufficient)
- Confident managing a varied workload independently and taking ownership of multiple business functions
- Strong Excel skills with the ability to produce accurate reports and manage financial data
- Proactive, organised and adaptable, with the confidence to support both finance and wider office operations

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
