Bookkeeper
High Wycombe | £35,000 | Accountancy Practice | Part-Qualified Accountant Ideally
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Bookkeeper to join a well-established and growing accountancy practice based in High Wycombe.
This is a varied role within an Outsourced Accounting Services environment, supporting a portfolio of clients with their day-to-day bookkeeping and wider accounting requirements.
We are looking for someone who enjoys more than simply processing transactions. You will have the opportunity to work directly with clients, prepare information for management accounts, deal with queries and take ownership of your workload.
Ideally, you will be part-qualified or studying towards an accountancy qualification, although strong bookkeeping experience within an accountancy practice will also be considered.
1) The Role
Working as part of the Outsourced Accounting Services team, you will provide bookkeeping support to a range of external clients, working across different businesses and accounting systems.
The role will include:
- Posting sales, purchase, bank and journal entries accurately and efficiently.
- Preparing and reconciling control accounts and producing information required for management accounts.
- Writing up clients' cashbooks using the relevant accounting software.
- Carrying out bookkeeping for clients both remotely and, where required, at client premises.
- Preparing sensible analysis, summaries and basic working papers.
- Reviewing bookkeeping completed by other members of the team and ensuring information is accurate and complete.
- Liaising directly with clients to answer queries, resolve bookkeeping issues and help finalise jobs.
- Supporting the wider team with client accounting and outsourced finance work.
- Using cloud-based bookkeeping systems such as Xero, Sage and QuickBooks.
- Working with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook as part of your day-to-day role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
It is a role that offers genuine variety. You will work with different clients, different businesses and different accounting requirements rather than being restricted to one set of accounts.
You will also be trusted to manage your own workload, with the expectation that you can work independently while knowing when to ask for support.
2) About You
You will ideally have previous bookkeeping experience within an accountancy practice, although applications from strong industry-based bookkeepers with relevant experience will also be considered.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are:
- Experienced in bookkeeping and comfortable dealing with sales, purchases, banking and journals.
- Confident with reconciliations and producing accurate financial information.
- Familiar with cloud accounting software, particularly Xero, Sage and/or QuickBooks.
- Ideally AAT qualified, part-qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA, or actively studying towards an accountancy qualification.
- Comfortable working across a portfolio of clients rather than concentrating on a single business.
- Able to communicate confidently and professionally with clients.
- Highly organised, with good attention to detail.
- IT literate, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Able to work independently and take responsibility for getting jobs completed.
- Commercially aware and able to understand the bigger picture behind the numbers.
- Someone who takes pride in producing accurate work and providing a good service to clients.
Most importantly, you will be someone who enjoys working in a professional accountancy environment and wants to continue developing your accounting career.

3) The Offer
In return, you can expect a salary of around £35,000, depending on experience and qualifications, together with the opportunity to develop your career within an established accountancy practice.
This is a particularly good opportunity for someone who has built a solid bookkeeping background and now wants to take the next step towards a broader accounting role.
If you are already studying towards AAT, ACCA, ACA or CIMA, the role could provide excellent practical experience alongside your studies.
You will gain exposure to a variety of clients and accounting situations, develop your technical bookkeeping and accounting skills, and work within a team where there is scope to take on additional responsibility as your experience grows.
The variety of client work also means that no two days are necessarily the same. If you enjoy working with businesses, dealing with people and getting under the skin of the numbers, this could be an excellent next move.
