Branch Manager – Garden & Landscaping

GPH Builders Merchants is looking for an ambitious and commercially driven Store Manager to lead our established Garden & Landscaping Centre in Ellon through its next stage of growth.

This is not a traditional garden centre management role. GPH Garden & Landscaping Centre combines the best elements of a garden centre, landscaping merchant, and specialist garden machinery retailer. We offer customers practical, functional products at excellent value, alongside an extensive range of landscaping materials that would not normally be found in a conventional garden centre.

Our aim is simple: to make the Ellon branch a genuine destination for homeowners, keen DIY customers, gardeners, and professional landscapers across Aberdeenshire. A major part of our offer is garden machinery and equipment. GPH's position as an approved STIHL dealer, supported by plans to develop a wider portfolio of leading equipment brands, creates significant potential to grow this part of the business.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for someone who wants to run a business, not simply manage a store. You will have considerable autonomy to develop the branch, improve its commercial performance, and identify new opportunities. You will be supported by the wider GPH senior management team, purchasing resource, and established infrastructure, while being trusted to make decisions locally.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the overall performance of the Garden & Landscaping Centre, including sales, margin, stock, merchandising, customer experience, and team performance. You will be expected to challenge how things are currently done, introduce new ideas, and create an environment where both the team and the business can perform at their best.

What We're Looking For:

The right person may already be working in garden retail, landscaping, builders' merchants, agricultural retail, machinery, DIY, or another commercially focused retail environment. More important than the sector you come from is your attitude.

You should be someone who:

  • Has experience of successfully managing and motivating a team.
  • Can demonstrate strong commercial awareness and understands how to drive sales and profitability.
  • Has experience of managing change and improving the performance of a business or department.
  • Sets high standards and creates accountability within a team.
  • Is comfortable making decisions and taking ownership of results.
  • Understands the importance of stock presentation, merchandising, and an excellent customer experience.
  • Enjoys developing new products, ranges, and commercial opportunities.
  • Has the confidence to build relationships with suppliers, customers, and the local community.
  • Brings energy, enthusiasm, and, most importantly, a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Knowledge of garden machinery, landscaping products, or brands such as STIHL would be advantageous but is not essential.

Package:

An attractive salary and benefits package will be offered to secure the right individual. The role is full-time, working five days from seven on a rota basis, including an appropriate share of weekend working. For an ambitious retail manager who wants greater responsibility, greater autonomy, and the opportunity to put their own stamp on an established business with significant growth potential, this is an unusual opportunity.

If you have the drive to take ownership of a business and lead it to its next stage of growth, we would like to hear from you.
