Role Overview

As the HR Trustee, you’ll provide strategic direction and oversight in shaping and strengthening the branch’s people strategy, ensuring compliance with employment laws and fostering a positive and inclusive organisational culture.

As an HR Trustee, your expertise will help shape the branch’s people strategy, ensuring a legally compliant, inclusive, and engaged workforce. By supporting staff and volunteer development, advising on best HR practices, and strengthening governance, you’ll empower the branch to operate effectively and sustainably. Your contributions will directly enhance the wellbeing of those who work tirelessly to support animal welfare, ensuring a strong and motivated team for years to come.

What Are We Looking For?

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities and attributes:

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • A forward-thinking individual with the ability to shape and influence HR strategy at a governance level.
  • Experience advising senior leadership or boards on people-related matters, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
  • A strong understanding of HR governance, compliance, and risk management.

HR Expertise & Compliance

  • A deep knowledge of employment law, HR policies, and best practices in people management.
  • Experience in key HR areas such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and workforce planning.
  • An ability to assess and mitigate workforce risks, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.

What Will You Be Doing?

We are seeking a dedicated and strategic HR professional with the expertise to guide our people strategy while upholding the values and mission of the RSPCA Canterbury & District Branch. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of HR governance, compliance, and workforce planning, with experience advising senior leadership or boards on employment matters. They will bring a deep knowledge of employment law, recruitment, employee relations, and performance management, ensuring legal and ethical best practices.

A passion for fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture is essential, along with a commitment to staff and volunteer wellbeing, engagement, and development. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are key, enabling the successful candidate to collaborate effectively with fellow trustees and stakeholders, translating complex HR issues into clear, practical guidance. They will be proactive, solutions-focused, and committed to the organisation’s mission, contributing their expertise to help the branch operate effectively and sustainably.
