The Opportunity
TXM Recruit is supporting a leading infrastructure organisation with the appointment of a Bridge Manager to take responsibility for the inspection, maintenance and operational management of a major strategic highway structure in the South West.
This is a senior position combining structures-based asset management, technical engineering knowledge and operational leadership.
You'll become the key technical and operational point of contact for the asset, leading a multidisciplinary team responsible for structural inspections, planned and reactive maintenance, renewals and ongoing asset performance.
You'll need the engineering credibility to understand structural defects, inspection findings, risk and proposed solutions, but your primary responsibility will be leading the operation – ensuring the right engineers, contractors, resources and stakeholders come together to deliver work safely and effectively.
The Role
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading structural inspection, maintenance, repair and renewal activities
- Providing technical and operational leadership across a complex major structure
- Interpreting inspection findings, structural defects and associated engineering risks
- Managing and developing a multidisciplinary inspection and operations team
- Coordinating planned, reactive and time-critical engineering works
- Overseeing workbanks, programmes, access arrangements and resources
- Managing specialist contractors and the wider engineering supply chain
- Supporting structural renewal schemes through design and construction
- Ensuring effective integration between inspection, maintenance, construction and operational activities
- Managing programme, cost, risk, safety and contractual performance
- Ensuring compliance with CDM and Principal Contractor responsibilities
- Driving operational efficiency, productivity and value for money
- Working closely with the client, local authorities and other senior stakeholders
- Supporting incident response and coordinating urgent engineering repairs
- Ensuring works are delivered safely while minimising disruption to the travelling public

What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge of bridges / large structures with genuine operational leadership experience.
You'll ideally bring:
- Significant experience working with bridges or complex civil engineering structures
- Structures-based asset management, inspection and maintenance experience
- Strong understanding of structural defects, inspections and engineering risk
- Experience delivering maintenance, repair or renewal programmes
- Leadership of multidisciplinary engineering and operational teams
- Strong client and stakeholder-management skills
- Experience managing specialist contractors and supply chains
- Knowledge of CDM and Principal Contractor responsibilities
- Experience working with NEC contracts
- Understanding of programme, cost, risk, commercial and safety management
- Experience operating in live, safety-critical infrastructure environments
- Ability to make sound decisions in high-risk and time-critical situations

Chartered or Incorporated status within Civil or Structural Engineering would be highly desirable, although candidates actively progressing towards professional registration will also be considered.
Relevant backgrounds could include highways, rail, local authorities, engineering consultancies, specialist bridge inspection organisations or major infrastructure contractors. Experience across bridge inspections, structural examinations, monitoring, asset management, bridge maintenance or Principal Engineer-level responsibilities could all translate well.
