The role

Responsible to: CEO

Hours of work: 18 Hours per week (on-site)

Areas covered: Bexley Borough, SE London, Kent

Office Base: Bexley Deaf Centre, 5 Brampton Road,, DA7 4EZ

Salary: £15,912 pro rata (£30,940 fte)

Contract: Permanent

We are seeking a dynamic and driven British Sign Language Course Manager who can coordinate our British Sign Language Courses, lead the development of new projects and support organisational change to facilitate the growth of our services.

Starting with a strong foundation to build upon, you will lead the development of the BSL Course programme and oversee its delivery in partnership with Signature and our BSL tutors.

Job description

  • To manage all BSL courses currently delivered at BDC, and ensure that they are taught in accordance with Signature approved learning outcomes.
  • Plan and promote the courses in a timely manner, ensuring that courses are fully subscribed and viable.
  • Develop a strong working relationship with Signature, the examining body and any other regulatory bodies as required.
  • Developing effective communication between the students, the tutors and the charity.
  • To communicate the assessment criteria and marking descriptors with tutors and students.
  • To ensure that students receive a comprehensive induction to their chosen course and to support students in understanding what the requirements are to enable them to complete and pass the course.
  • Planning and managing complimentary courses such as Introduction to Sign Language, Sign Tasters and BSL for older, retired people.
  • To manage students’ expectations of Bexley Deaf Centre as a training facility. Dealing with and resolving matters of concern from students and tutors regarding courses, including complaints.
  • Ensuring that all course delivery adheres to best practices, ethical guidelines and legislation.
  • To co-ordinate the preparation of the self- evaluation document for the periodic review of the courses.
  • Overseeing payments for courses and working with the Finance Coordinator to ensure that courses are paid for in a timely manner and that student payment plans are managed and monitored effectively.
  • Be prepared to work some evenings and weekends to oversee assessments and student inductions.

Person specification

Essential requirements

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a BSL level 3 qualification or BSL level 2, working towards BSL level 3
  • Able to develop rapport and build strong relationships with a wide range of people, including people who are Deaf or with hearing loss.
  • Excellent time management, organisational and administrative skills.
  • A high level of literacy.
  • Strong computer literacy skills including use of Microsoft 365 tools, Canva, etc.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the charity sector.

Experience:

  • Experience in administering British Sign Language Courses (or similar).
  • Experience of working within an education setting
  • An understanding of qualifications, marking criteria, curriculums and examinations.
  • Experience of working with Deaf people and Deaf Culture would be a distinct advantage.
