PROPOSED SALARY RANGE

£27,000 - £28,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Broadcast Operator is a technical role responsible for supporting the delivery of high-quality live, recorded and post-produced content across studio, outside broadcast and post-production environments. The role requires full competence in at least one specialist operational discipline and the ability to undertake a broad range of technical tasks across multiple craft areas following appropriate training.

Working collaboratively with producers, directors, presenters, contributors and technical teams, the postholder will operate specialist broadcast equipment, support programme production workflows and ensure output is delivered to the highest creative, technical, editorial and safety standards. The role contributes to a flexible workforce capable of meeting the evolving needs of modern broadcast and digital production.

The Broadcast Operator will primarily work within their specialist craft area while developing and maintaining the skills required to operate across other disciplines. The role requires sound technical judgement, strong communication skills, adaptability, and a proactive approach to supporting the production of engaging content for audiences across a range of platforms.

This role combines technical expertise, operational flexibility and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality content across studio, outside broadcast and post-production operations.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

  • Camera Operations: Provide camera support across studio, location and outside broadcast productions, operating and rigging a range of camera equipment to capture high-quality visual content.
  • Broadcast Vision and IP Operations: Operate vision mixing equipment to a medium level of craft complexity. Carry out source switching, mixing, keying and effects, with or without directorial instruction. Assist with the rigging and operation of IP-based production and streaming equipment.
  • Assistant Graphics and Postproduction Editor: Provide post-production editing and graphics support across multiple production teams to support programme delivery. Working collaboratively across creative and production teams, contributing to high-quality, audience-focused content.
  • Floor Managing: Act as the Director’s representative on the studio floor, coordinating presenters, contributors, guests and production staff to ensure productions run safely, efficiently and to schedule. Maintain studio discipline throughout rehearsals, recordings and live transmissions.
  • Audio Operations: Provide audio support for radio, studio and outside broadcast productions, ensuring high-quality sound balance, recording, editing and playback for straightforward programme outputs. The post holder also undertakes location recording, sound assistant duties and equipment setup while ensuring artistic, technical and safety standards are maintained at all times.

Essential Criteria

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in a live broadcast environment
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to quickly assess critical problems under pressure and to control and manage available resources to achieve a work around.
  • Good technical knowledge of broadcast systems and infrastructure and studio/OB facilities
  • Interest in IP infrastructure and workflow

Desired But Not Required

  • Awareness of BBC policy on health, safety and security
  • Good understanding of the language and terminology of television and the geography of a studio floor and the layout of cameras
  • Successful completion of basic sound training courses or equivalent
  • Experience of managing a media library
  • Editorial awareness and an understanding of BBC News priorities and objectives
