Job Description

We operate a hybrid working model, with a split of three days in the Manchester office and two days at home.
What you will be doing
As a Broker Underwriting Specialist, you’ll be a key part of the journey from application to approval, delivering exceptional service to brokers and customers while ensuring all lending decisions align with policy, procedures and risk appetite. Using your underwriting expertise and knowledge of lending criteria, you’ll assess applications, manage case pipelines and work closely with brokers and internal teams to achieve positive customer outcomes.
- Assess new mortgage applications against lending policy and criteria.
- Review and assess supporting documentation including valuations, income evidence, bank statements and credit reports.
- Manage a pipeline of cases, ensuring applications progress efficiently through the underwriting process.
- Build strong relationships with brokers, packagers and internal stakeholders to deliver outstanding service.
- Respond to queries and provide updates on application progress, ensuring clear and proactive communication.
- Apply sound judgement to assess individual circumstances and supporting evidence, ensuring fair and consistent lending decisions.
- Ensure all decisions and processing activities are completed in line with regulatory requirements and business objectives.
- Meet agreed service levels, quality standards and performance targets.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement across underwriting processes and customer journeys.
- Support a positive compliance, risk and customer-focused culture across the business.

What we are looking for
We’re looking for a customer-focused underwriting professional with a strong understanding of mortgage lending and a passion for delivering great outcomes. You’ll be an excellent communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment, balancing attention to detail with strong relationship-building skills. With a proactive and collaborative approach, you’ll enjoy working as part of a team while taking ownership of your individual caseload.
- Experience within mortgage underwriting, specialist lending or a related financial services environment.
- Strong understanding of mortgage lending principles, underwriting processes and customer journeys.
- Knowledge of FCA regulation, Consumer Duty and mortgage lending requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to build relationships with brokers, customers and internal stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a busy pipeline and prioritise effectively.
- High attention to detail and the ability to make informed, risk-based decisions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- A proactive, adaptable and team-oriented approach to work.
