The vacancy
We are looking for three British Sign Language Interpreter / Communication Workers to join our Additional Learning Support team. This is an important role that helps Deaf learners and students with additional support needs access education, participate fully in college life, and achieve their potential.
Working closely with students, tutors, and support staff, you will provide BSL interpretation within lessons and across the wider college environment. You will contribute to removing barriers to learning, supporting student achievement, and promoting independent learning. The role also includes participation in student reviews, support planning, and examination access arrangements.
We are looking to recruit three BSL Signers to support our learners across the following working patterns:
- Post 1: 18 hours per week, working Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 6 hours per day.
- Post 2: 12 hours per week, working Thursday and Friday, 6 hours per day.
- Post 3: 6 hours per week, working Friday only, 6 hours per day.
This is a part-time fixed-term role for 37 weeks per year.
Actual Salary:
- 18 hours per week: £12,250.55 – £13,357.07 (Full-time equivalent of £27,944- £30,468)
- 12 hours per week: £8,167.04 – £8,904.71 (Full-time equivalent of £27,944- £30,468)
- 6 hours per week: £4,083.52 – £4,452.36 (Full-time equivalent of £27,944- £30,468)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide BSL interpretation in lessons and around the college as required by students.
- Support learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities to access education and participate fully in learning.
- Contribute to support plans, student reviews, and learning support activities.
- Assist with examination access arrangements where required.
- Liaise with tutors and support colleagues regarding student support needs.
- Deliver guidance and support to staff relating to learner requirements.
- Attend monitoring meetings, training, and continuing professional development activities.
- Complete relevant administrative duties and maintain accurate records.
- Support departmental improvement activities, including quality and self-assessment processes.
- Work collaboratively to promote learner retention, achievement, and positive outcomes.
Essential Criteria
- Level 3 British Sign Language qualification.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, ideally demonstrated through GCSE-level English or equivalent.
- Experience of supporting students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and stakeholders.

Important Things to Note
- In DN Colleges, we call this role BSL Signer but you might know this as British Sign Language Interpreter, BSL Interpreter, Communication Support Worker, Deaf Support Worker, or British Sign Language Communication Worker.
