Phone scammers are becoming more and more prevalent today and they are getting smarter at how they go about trying to extort money or information from you.
A very common one is the BT/Microsoft Scam. In this article we will look at what they are trying to do and how you can protect yourself against it.
What They Do
The scammer calls you and will tell you they are from a large technology company like BT, Microsoft or I even heard them say they are from Google!
They will try and confuse you with technical jargon and convince you that you have a problem with your router or a computer in your house.
Once they have got you convinced, they will then get you to use your computer to either
- give them remote access to your computer
- extort money from you for some fictitious service they will provide
- trick you into installing software that will capture sensitive data

Since people have become more aware of these scams they will try and convince you that they are genuine by telling you information about you that they have already got from the black market like your name and telephone number. They will even go so far as to get you to run a few commands on your computer that will show you a number that looks like a unique ID. They then read you the ID number to convince you. Turns out it’s the same number on every computer running Windows:

So, What Should You Do
Firstly, it’s important to know that none of these large companies are monitoring your computers or broadband, so they are not going to ring you to tell you you have a problem and help you fix it. In fact, if you have ever tried to ring BT/Microsoft to report a problem you will know that it is a real effort to get anything done, they are so busy trying to fix reported problems that actively ringing you to help you is just not going to happen!

What you should do is simply: HANG UP
People often worry “What if there is a problem with my computer or broadband?”. If you haven’t noticed anything unusual with your internet connection or your computer, then don’t worry. If you have then if it’s your computer, contact a local IT engineer for advice or if it’s your internet call your internet provider i.e. BT directly and report the problem.
