Apprenticeship planned increase to £29,071 per annum. Subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship and meeting the required competencies, you will have the opportunity to progress through the grade 6 Assistant Building Control Surveyor (RBI Class 1) from £29,542 to £32,046.

Training Course

Building control surveyor (integrated degree) (level 6)
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
Primarily agile working with regular site visits, inspections and occasional attendance at Council offices.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The Apprentice will carry out the following duties, with appropriate support and supervision:

  • Administer the day-to-day control of building work within Cheshire West and Chester Council and examination of applications submitted for compliance with the technical requirements of the Building Regulations together with all statutory consultations with other council service areas and external agencies.
  • Undertake all required site inspections and additional progress inspections that will be required; maintain accurate records of inspections, site visits and meetings on the council’s back office system; attend site/office meetings with developers, applicants and members of the general public on all relevant matters relating to building control.
  • Undertake initial investigations of alleged breaches of Building Regulations and allied legislation, including the identification of contraventions and preventative measures to deal with them; assist with the preparation of evidence for legal proceedings and when necessary attendance of Court hearings, in accordance with the Corporate Enforcement Policy and statutory timescales.
  • Responsibility for the statutory control of dangerous buildings and structures during office hours including inspections, implementing emergency procedures, taking a lead role and liaising with the other emergency services, engaging contractors, working in hazardous and unpleasant environments and maintaining a site presence until the danger is removed, resulting in safe compliant buildings.
  • Following a period of training, to assess applications for demolition under s80-81 of the Building Act 1984 and to issue demolition counter notices.
  • Develop the skills, knowledge and experience to allow you to successfully attain class 2A registration with the Building Safety Regulator.
  • Assist with building regulation applications relating to new build domestic developments and alterations to convert premises into dwellings to guide customers in understanding building control processes and requirements resulting in a customer-focused service.
  • Liaise and communicate with all professional and non-professional stakeholders to help provide a clear understanding of the legislative requirements of the building control functions and remove any negative impact on customers and the wider community.
  • Take a lead role in the administration of the Building Safety Levy for in-scope new build housing developments.
