Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Engineer

Intermediate – Principal Engineer | Manchester | £40,000+ DOE

Manchester | Hybrid | Multi Disciplinary Consultancy

An established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is expanding its specialist Building Technologies / Controls team in Manchester and is looking for BEMS Engineers from Intermediate through to Principal level.

This is an opportunity to join a growing specialist team working on technically interesting projects across Defence, Aviation, Healthcare, Data Centres, Education and Commercial sectors.

The Manchester team forms part of a wider national and international Building Technologies function, working alongside specialists in BEMS, Control & Instrumentation, SCADA, ICT, CCTV and Access Control.

The Role

This is a design-led BEMS position, with a strong emphasis on understanding controls principles, developing control strategies and producing technical specifications rather than simply delivering manufacturer or contractor-led solutions.

Depending on experience, you will be involved in:

  • Developing BEMS and controls strategies in conjunction with wider MEP building services designs.
  • Producing detailed BEMS specifications, schematics, points schedules and design drawings.
  • Developing control philosophies and design principles for complex building services systems.
  • Working closely with Mechanical, Electrical and other building services disciplines to ensure integrated control solutions.
  • Undertaking site surveys, inspections and witnessing of BEMS installations where required.
  • Reviewing designs and providing technical advice on BEMS, controls networks, protocols and supervisory systems.
  • Preparing technical reports and documentation.
  • Attending client and contractor meetings and representing the consultancy on technical matters.
  • Supporting the development of internal technical standards, processes and best practice.
  • Depending on seniority, mentoring junior engineers and taking responsibility for technical delivery and project packages.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The role is predominantly office/home-office based, with limited site travel compared with traditional BEMS commissioning-focused positions. There will be opportunities to work on projects across the UK and internationally.

What They're Looking For

The team is open to candidates from a range of BEMS and controls backgrounds. The key requirement is genuine design and specification experience.

You could be an experienced BEMS Engineer, Controls Engineer, Building Controls Engineer, BMS Design Engineer or someone from a related Building Technologies / Control & Instrumentation background.

The most important requirements are:

  • Ideally 2–3+ years' experience within BEMS, BMS, controls or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong understanding of the principles of controls design.
  • Experience producing BEMS/control specifications and technical documentation.
  • The ability to develop a control strategy/design rather than simply produce a manufacturer's or contractor's standard solution.
  • Understanding of BEMS networks, protocols and supervisory systems.
  • Experience working alongside wider MEP/building services disciplines.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to explain technical solutions to clients and project teams.
  • Degree/HNC/HND or equivalent engineering qualification is advantageous, but relevant industry experience will also be considered.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional UK travel when required.

Security clearance, particularly SC Clearance, would be advantageous due to the volume of Defence-related work, although it is not essential.

The Projects

The team is currently working across a diverse range of technically demanding projects, with particularly strong workloads in:

Current and recent project exposure includes major aviation and defence programmes, including work associated with major UK airports and large infrastructure clients.

There is also scope to become involved in projects across the wider UK and international markets, including work supporting teams in the Middle East.

Career Level & Salary

The vacancy is open from Intermediate through to Principal Engineer, with salary reflecting experience and seniority.

Salary: £40,000+ depending on experience

The role has been deliberately kept broad because the team is open to appointing at different levels. More senior candidates with substantial specification, design leadership and client-facing experience can be considered accordingly.

Why Join?

This is a particularly good opportunity for someone who wants to move further into consultancy-led BEMS design rather than remaining purely on the contractor/commissioning side.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Work on major UK infrastructure and building projects.
  • Develop technically complex BEMS and controls strategies.
  • Work alongside Mechanical, Electrical, ICT and wider Building Technologies specialists.
  • Gain exposure to Defence, Aviation, Data Centre and Healthcare projects.
  • Develop your career within a large, technically strong multidisciplinary consultancy.
  • Work within a predominantly hybrid/home-office environment.
  • Access structured technical and professional development.
  • Progress towards greater technical, project and leadership responsibility.

If you're a BEMS/Controls Engineer who enjoys the engineering and design side of controls and wants to work on major multidisciplinary projects, this could be an excellent next step.
