Canterbury City Council serves the district of Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and 24 surrounding villages, providing more than 70 services to residents, businesses and visitors. The council focuses on caring for the local area and the people who make it distinctive, with services ranging from waste collection, housing and planning to culture, leisure, open spaces, parking and environmental health. A total of 39 elected councillors work closely with council staff to make decisions on how the district is governed and to deliver high-quality services. The council also collaborates with Kent County Council and local emergency services on areas such as education, highways, social services, libraries and community safety. Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site Building Surveyor role based in Canterbury. The Building Surveyor will carry out inspections and condition surveys of council-owned and managed properties, preparing detailed reports and recommendations. The role includes undertaking feasibility studies to support investment decisions, maintenance plans and improvement projects. The Building Surveyor will manage building-related contracts, monitor contractor performance, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards and council policies. Day-to-day responsibilities also include handling dilapidations matters, advising internal stakeholders, contributing to asset management strategies and supporting the safe, efficient use of the council’s property portfolio.

- Strong Building Surveying knowledge, including inspection, reporting and understanding of building pathology.
- Experience conducting Condition Surveys to assess building performance and maintenance needs.
- Ability to undertake Feasibility Studies to evaluate options, costs and risks for property projects.
- Skills in Contract Management, including supervising works, managing budgets and ensuring quality and compliance.
- Experience dealing with Dilapidations, advising on obligations, negotiations and documentation.
- Relevant professional qualification in building surveying or a closely related discipline; membership or working toward membership of a professional body (e.g., RICS) is an advantage.
- Good knowledge of building regulations, health and safety requirements and property-related legislation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and report-writing skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with colleagues, contractors and external partners.
- Competence in using surveying tools, property management systems and standard office software.
