MAIN LOCATION: Contact but may be required to work at other venues as required
RESPONSIBLE TO: Building and Operations Manager
RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A
WORKS WITH: Front of House and Technical Teams
HOURS: Part Time. Contracted 21 hours per week. As we work 100:80:100 this equates to working 16.8 hours per week.
STATUS: Permanent
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The Building Technician will perform a variety of maintenance, modification and repair activities to the plant, fabric and fittings of the premises in a safe and efficient manner, as well as assisting in the preparation for specific events and the day-to-day running of the building. Providing cover for the Building & Operations Manager in his absence will occasionally be required which includes some basic tasks attributed to the day-time Duty Manager role.
MAIN TASKS
- Assist the Building & Operations Manager with all tasks as required to ensure the efficient running of the building and its services.
- Various maintenance activities around the building, including basic joinery, plumbing, and decorating.
- Changing of light fittings and lamps.
- Occasional support of Duty Managers in preparation of main spaces and rooms, for a variety of meetings, workshops and events.
- Undertaking light office equipment/furniture movement within the building and other light porter duties.
- In consultation with the Building & Operations Manager, to accurately estimate labour and materials needs for specific projects, including ordering and collection of materials when required.
- Keep accurate records of time spent and activities completed on a daily basis.
- Some external house-keeping duties, such as: tidying of bin area, sweeping and washing decking and occasional litter picking.
- Carrying out routine maintenance on the Contact vehicle.
- Carry out or supervise water quality testing in accordance with the Legionella Risk Assessment.
- Contribute to the assessment of Capital proposals in relation to their impact and the viability of existing legacy systems.

GENERAL
- To attend departmental, company and operational meetings as required.
- To represent Contact to external bodies and organisations as required.
- Adherence to Contact’s Health and Safety policy, undertaking such duties as are required and ensuring that reasonable care is taken to ensure a healthy and safe working and public environment.

- To interact directly with young people through apprenticeships and work placements as a way of contributing to their development.
- To contribute where appropriate to the training and development of Contact staff.
- Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required in connection with the position.
- Manage, control and report on all budgets relating to your team/area, delegating budgetary authority where appropriate.
- To advise and report regularly on activity as required by the wider Senior Management Team, Board and sub-boards, supplying any data required to meet funder reporting requirements.
- To provide mentoring and support to young people and on occasions deliver training/workshops in areas relevant to your job role.
- In line with Contact’s governance model, pro-actively engage young people in decision-making through consultations, young people’s panels and other mechanisms relevant to your job role.
- To manage all personal data in line with the General Data Protection Regulations, using the Spektrix database as directed.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL
- Practical experience in carrying out building maintenance work.
- Experience of working in a maintenance environment.
- Ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
- Ability to apply attention to detail when carrying out maintenance.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritize working activities.
- Understanding of the importance of good customer service within the arts industry.
- Clear understanding of Health and Safety legislation in relation to maintenance activities within a commercial/industrial premises.
- Clean current driving license.
- Enthusiasm for working in a creative organisation
- Enthusiasm for and commitment to Equal Opportunities practice
- Enthusiasm and commitment for working in an environment focused on young people (aged 13 – 30)
DESIRABLE
- A professional qualification in one of the building trades, such as: electrical engineering, plumbing and/or joinery.
- Willingness to be flexible in shift patterns including occasional evenings and weekends
- Ability to apply creative problem solving when dealing with unusual repairs.
